Siemens Partners with Sony

PLANO, TX, May 16, 2024 Siemens and Sony Corp. are partnering to introduce a new solution that combines the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio of industry software with Sony’s new XR head-mounted display (HMD), SRH-S1 – designed using Siemens’ NX software, a core solution used across Sony to design its industry leading products.

On stage at Realize LIVE in Las Vegas, Seiya Amatatsu, Head of Sony’s XR Technology Development Division, detailed how his team relies on Siemens’ NX software from the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio to help develop a new HMD. The SRH-S1 includes an XR head-mounted display with high-quality 4K OLED Microdisplays and controllers for intuitive interaction with 3D objects. Sony has been using the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio as its primary product engineering software since 2015, at an accelerated pace.

“Sony succeeded in implementing NX in the fastest schedule in the world and we were able to improve our design process productivity by 25%. Although significant advancements have been made with NX, I wanted to achieve further evolution with a product that brings innovations allowing direct editing in an immersive environment. I believed that could be realized with Siemens and as a result, the XR head-mounted display was developed that could bring innovative products to market more rapidly,” said Sony’s Amatatsu.

Sony’s XR head-mounted display is a fundamental part of the forthcoming NX Immersive Designer, an integrated solution that combines Siemens’ industry leading product engineering software, NX, exclusively with Sony’s breakthrough XR technology to deliver immersive design and collaborative product engineering capabilities.

“At Sony, we are committed to creators. In every line of our business, we want to enable creators to create, and the SRH-S1 does just that. Our head-mounted display and dedicated controllers lets you create more intuitively in a fully immersive environment, allowing you to move freely between the virtual and real worlds — collaborating and creating with colleagues around the world in real time, – and it will enable more innovation,” explained Hirohito Kondo, deputy general manager, XR Business Development Division, Product Management Department of Sony.

“The tight integration of the hardware and software gives designers and engineers all new, incredibly natural ways to interact with the Digital Twin. And that interaction is the key. We’re not just viewing designs. This is about doing meaningful hands-on engineering. That is why the image quality is so important – as well as the precision of the controls and even the comfort of the headset – because together, it lets you collaborate more, engineer better, and innovate faster. It lets you do real, meaningful engineering — and without ever having to build a physical prototype.”

Siemens’ NX Immersive Designer is expected to launch at the end of 2024. About Velo3D

Velo3D is a metal 3D printing technology company. 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), has a unique ability to improve the way high-value metal parts are built. However, legacy metal AM has been greatly limited in its capabilities since its invention almost 30 years ago. This has prevented the technology from being used to create the most valuable and impactful parts, restricting its use to specific niches where the limitations were acceptable.

Velo3D has overcome these limitations so engineers can design and print the parts they want. The company’s solution unlocks a wide breadth of design freedom and enables customers in space exploration, aviation, power generation, energy, and semiconductor to innovate the future in their respective industries. Using Velo3D, these customers can now build mission-critical metal parts that were previously impossible to manufacture. The fully integrated solution includes the Flow print preparation software, the Sapphire family of printers, and the Assure quality control system—all of which are powered by Velo3D’s Intelligent Fusion manufacturing process. The company delivered its first Sapphire system in 2018 and has been a strategic partner to innovators such as SpaceX, Honeywell, Honda, Chromalloy, and Lam Research. Velo3D has been named as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies for 2023.

CoreTechnologie Updates 4D_Additive, Adds Texture Library

MOEMBRIS, Germany, May 15, 2024 – The 3D printing software 4D_Additive from the Franco-German software developer CoreTechnologie now has a texture library in accordance with the VDI 3400 guideline. With the optimized textures module, the surfaces of 3D-printed components can be visually and functionally enhanced with just a few clicks.

With 4D_Additive, VDI surface textures are generated directly on the CAD models to eliminate the stairstepping effects in 3D printing | Photo Credit: CoreTechnologie GmbH

Aesthetic and Functional Surface Refinement

The textures of the optimized 4D_Additive Software tool improve the appearance, give additively manufactured components an aesthetic look and conceal irregularities that occur during production and printing, just like in injection molding. For the new type of surface finishing, special textures based on the VDI 3400 standard are now available in the textures module. The surface finishes of the VDI 3400 Surface Finish Guideline of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) are used worldwide for products for which a certain texture or grain is desired for aesthetic and functional reasons.

Easy to Use

Designers and engineers simply select the right texture for surface design and surface finishing from the extensive texture library. The 4D_Additive software works directly with the exact CAD models. The desired surfaces and texture areas are selected with just a few clicks and the surface structures predefined in the library are generated. The stair-stepping effect, which is particularly undesirable in 3D printing, is automatically concealed.

In contrast to the time-consuming process of creating textures in toolmaking, additive manufacturing allows surface design to be created on any 3D/CAD geometry in just a few seconds using the software.

The relevance of surface finishing is increasing, particularly in the increasingly important process of additively manufactured small series parts. From a commercial perspective, products with high surface quality and aesthetics that are provided with textures and graining are more attractive to customers and convey a higher quality standard.

Further information on the software is available at www.coretechnologie.com/products/4d-additive.

Prior to joining Alquist, he led Central US public sector sales at Socure, an industry leader in AI/ML technologies for identity verification and fraud prevention. Mike’s tenure at Socure was preceded by his role as a strategic advisor to executives and entrepreneurs at Goldman Sachs in Chicago, where he was instrumental in managing assets exceeding $1.5 billion.

A distinguished defense technologist, Mike has held senior positions at QinetiQ North America’s Survivability Group and currently serves as an Advisory Board Member at Leonid Capital Partners, fostering critical connections between military end-users, tech entrepreneurs, and the US Department of Defense.

“Mike’s unique blend of strategic foresight and his extensive experience at the intersection of technology and operational leadership make him the ideal choice to steer our strategic initiatives,” said Patrick Callahan, CEO of Alquist 3D. “We are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to push the boundaries of 3D construction technology.”

In addition to his professional endeavors, Mike has an ongoing US Army career, currently serving in Special Forces assignments. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from The Johns Hopkins University where he played football and basketball and has furthered his education with a Master of Arts in Intelligence Studies from American Military University and a Master in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

“Joining Alquist 3D feels like a natural progression in my career as it combines my previous experiences in technology and strategic development with my passion for transformative innovation,” said Mike Halas. “I am excited to contribute to Alquist’s mission of advancing the construction industry into a new era of efficiency and sustainability. And many thanks to Zachary, Patrick, and the Alquist 3D team for the opportunity!”

Alquist 3D is set to benefit greatly from Mike’s strategic acumen as it continues to expand its influence in the high-tech realm of 3D home and infrastructure printing.
