Akribis Announces RDM-A Series Rod Motors

Akribis Systems has announced a new addition to its varied motion control product line: RDM-A Series rod motors for space-constrained applications requiring high motor forces and smooth linear motion.

RDM-A Series rod motors are compact in size and feature a tubular design to distribute magnetic flux evenly along the circumference of the stator. With this approach, they achieve continuous forces from 2.1 to 137.8N and peak forces from 6.2 to 413.4N. An air gap between the coil and magnet track enables non-contact axial linear movement and steady force production over the length of the stroke, and ironless construction ensures cog-free motion. The result: high motor forces, smooth motion, efficiency and precision.

A multi-mover option allows single motor control over multiple movers on one track to simplify complex, multi-axis applications.

L-com Introduces Coiled, Hospital-Grade Power Cords

IRVINE, CA, May 9, 2024 – L-com, an Infinite Electronics brand and a supplier of wired and wireless connectivity products, has just introduced a new line of coiled, hospital-grade power cords. They are designed to eliminate accidental disconnections and allow movement for critical equipment used in healthcare facilities, industrial settings, the food and beverage industry, PCs and servers.

The rugged design of these products starts with the plugs. All models have heavy-duty HGN5-15 plugs on one end and either a C13 receptacle or no connector on the other end. Those versions with one open end allow you to attach any suitable connector. The NEMA 5-15 plugs are beefy, one of the most durable on the market, and can withstand abuse. They have a solid ground pin that reduces accidental disconnects caused by bumping or pulling.

Choose a plug with or without an LED light that constantly indicates whether it is properly plugged in and receiving power. This feature is helpful for at-a-glance monitoring of critical equipment. Right-angle plugs are also an option and are especially handy when the equipment being powered is located close to the outlet.

The most useful feature of L-com’s new coiled stretch cable is the coil itself. Such a design allows you to move devices more easily and helps prevent the sudden disconnections that sometimes occur with non-coiled power cords. This new compressed coil cable also takes up less floor space, as it compresses to shorter lengths, eliminating the slack found with non-coiled cables. Choose between a 1-foot cord that stretches out to about 8 feet, or a 2-foot cord that extends to about 15 feet.

To ensure the coils don’t stretch out and lose their elasticity over time, these new models are made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). TPE holds coils better than PVC, ensuring elasticity. The jacket is rated SJT, suitable for indoor use.

L-com offers a dozen different configurations of the new power cords. These include HGN5-15 plugs to C13 straight connectors, to C13 right-angle connectors, or to open ends. Each configuration comes in one-foot or two-foot compressed lengths, and with or without an LED on the plug.

“Our new coiled power cables are perfect for critical equipment that must stay plugged in even when it is being moved,” said Product Line Manager Dustin Guttadauro. “They serve well in busy, fast-moving work environments such as hospitals, manufacturing and restaurants.”

L-com’s new coiled, hospital-grade power cords are in stock now and available for immediate shipment.

AMD Receives IEEE 2024 Corporate Innovation Award

SANTA CLARA, CA, May 9, 2024 – AMD received the prestigious 2024 Corporate Innovation Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) during a May 3 ceremony in Boston. The award recognizes AMD for pioneering the development and deployment of chiplet architecture designs for high-performance and adaptive computing.

AMD was among the first companies to leverage the benefits of chiplet architecture at scale to deliver significant advances in processor performance, efficiency and flexibility, extending the historical performance gains of Moore’s Law. In 2018, AMD introduced the first processor to feature a revolutionary chiplet-based x86 CPU design, the second-generation AMD EPYC server processor powered by the “Zen 2” core architecture. Since then, AMD has incorporated chiplet architectures across its leadership product portfolio, including AMD Ryzen CPUs for PCs, AMD EPYC processors for data centers and AMD Instinct accelerators for high performance computing (HPC) and AI.

“Several years ago, our passionate, world-class engineering teams began addressing the scaling challenges of traditional chip design,” said Mark Papermaster, executive vice president and chief technical officer, AMD. “Everyone takes modular architecture for granted now, but at the time it was radical thinking. Its success is as much a feat of engineering as a testament to the power of teams with diverse skills and expertise working together, despite uncertainty and risk, toward a common vision.”

AMD engineered the new processor design approach by distributing traditionally monolithic SoC designs into multiple smaller “chiplets.” This revolutionary shift allowed AMD to accelerate time-to-market with highly-performant, energy efficient and cost-effective chips that leveraged common designs for multiple markets.

The company’s leadership in driving chiplet design and innovation at scale continues to extend gains in computing performance and efficiency, enabling the industry to better address some of the world’s most challenging problems. For example, chiplet-based AMD EPYC processors are in use within the Frontier supercomputer, the world’s first exascale supercomputer that is helping scientists to develop innovative technologies for energy, medicine, and materials.

For nearly a century, the IEEE Awards Program has paid tribute to researchers, inventors, innovators, educators, and practitioners whose exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions have made a lasting impact on technology, society, and the engineering profession. Each year, the IEEE Awards Board recommends a small number of extraordinary individuals for IEEE’s most prestigious honors. This is the second time AMD has received this award; in 2005 IEEE recognized the company for innovations in the evolution of the x86 microprocessors and its extension to a 64-bit architecture, which is the foundation of modern data centers and PCs.

About AMD

For more than 50 years AMD has driven innovation in high-performance computing, graphics and visualization technologies. Billions of people, leading Fortune 500 businesses and cutting-edge scientific research institutions around the world rely on AMD technology daily to improve how they live, work and play. AMD employees are focused on building leadership high-performance and adaptive products that push the boundaries of what is possible.
