FATHOM Launches 3D Printing Challenge

fathom_logo_150x100OAKLAND, CA, May 15, 2015 – FATHOM, a 3D printing expert driven by advanced manufacturing technologies that enhance and accelerate a company’s product development process, has launched its second 3D printing challenge of the year. The first challenge concluded on April 6 and the winner chosen by high-profile judges was announced on May 4.

Throughout 2015, FATHOM is holding three different 3D printing-focused challenges, all hosted through GrabCAD. The winners of each of the three challenge competitions will be assessed and evaluated by judges for the grand prize, which will be announced in September 2015. The ultimate Make the Unmakeable champion will win a uPrint SE FDM-based 3D printer from FATHOM.

“We were really excited to see so many people take interest in the first of three Make the Unmakeable Challenges this year,” said Rich Stump, principal and co-founder at FATHOM.

“Many of the entries from the first challenge were designed with traditional manufacturing methods in mind. Let go of what you know and think differently about how products are designed and manufactured. One of the greatest benefits of additive manufacturing is the unlimited design freedom to create what was once impossible and improve efficiencies like never before.”

In this second challenge, FATHOM has challenged designers and engineers to re-imagine off-the-shelf components. Having to design around traditional stock components is a problem because it increases part count, limits functionality, and hinders design freedom. Leveraging the unlimited design freedom of 3D printing – such as the ability to 3D print moving assemblies in a single build – design a hinge or fastener that improves upon conventional designs.
