IRVINE, CA, May 23, 2018 – EON Reality, the world leader in virtual reality based knowledge transfer for industry and education, announces that Prof Ihron Rensburg, the former vice chancellor and principal of the University of Johannesburg, has joined EON Reality Education as Vice Chairman of the advisory board. Prof Rensburg brings extensive experience in academia and guided the University of Johannesburg through its formative years.
Prof Rensburg’s deep experience in African education and his experience in improving access to education will be a great aid to EON Reality Education as it works to expanding Augmented and Virtual Reality based education globally. AVR technologies will play a large role in the expansion of Classroom 3.0, the experiential flipped classroom, and improving global access to a quality education.
“Ihron Rensburg’s track record of expanding the access to education in South Africa and leveraging technology to do so is a perfect match for EON Reality Education,” said Bertil Andersson, chairman of EON Reality Education’s Advisory Committee. “His contributions to the University of Johannesburg and to the African academic community show that he is a forward thinker and will help us expand Classroom 3.0, AVR research, and our outreach to academics worldwide.”
“Over the next two generations, Africa will grow from 1 billion to 4 billion people. Improving the flow of knowledge is a very critical part of transforming Africa into one of the leading continents in the world,” said Prof Ihron Rensburg. “Learning technologies that accelerate learning, especially experiential technology like Augmented and Virtual Reality, will be crucial to transfer the skills needed to leapfrog more advanced regions. EON Reality Education will play a key part in expanding access to education through technology in Africa and creating a more equitable learning environment with the KnowledgeBit Initiative and the EON Learn for Life Program.”
Prof Ihron Rensburg served as the vice chancellor and principal of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) from 2006 to 2017. He was instrumental in guiding the University through its early years after it was formed in 2005 as a merger of the then Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and the Soweto Campus of Vista University. Under his stewardship, UJ increased its enrollment from 46,000 to 52,000 and 86% of its student body comes from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. University of Johannesburg is now a leading African university with global stature and is ranked fifth among Africa’s universities, and ranked within the top 2% percent of universities in the world (2017/8 Shanghai Academic Ranking of Universities). It is also ranked among the top 100 universities in emerging nations (2018 Times Higher Education).
