Carleton University Becomes Academic PASS Suite User

PSRE Co., the leading developer of smart simulation and sizing tools for every piping and equipment engineer/designer, is pleased to announce that Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, with the active participation of Fluids & Co, PASS Authorized Distributor, has signed an Academic agreement with PSRE Co allowing the University to work with PASS software for research purposes.

Carleton University will use PASS/START-PROF and PASS/HYDROSYSTEM to perform piping analysis for various supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) Brayton cycle plants. sCO2 power cycles are new, advanced, high-efficiency power cycles that have attracted a fair bit of research and development interest over the last decade. The work that Carleton University specialists have been doing on sCO2 Brayton cycle development in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University has been done primarily through one of the capstone engineering projects, the Gas Turbine Project.

In the current Gas Turbine Project, several students design the piping system for a 100 MWe sCO2 Brayton cycle power plant and then study the system’s scaling to 50 and 300 MWe.

“We feel that the PASS software would allow the students to do a better, more complete design of the piping while gaining experience with an industrially relevant software package,” said Professor Henri Saari.

Students involved in the programs are divided into 10 or 11 projects of approximately 20 to 30 persons, supervised by professors and industry or government engineers as project managers and lead engineers. These projects are meant to emulate the working environment that students may find in industry when they graduate while working on real-world designs.

“The PASS team is happy to deliver our software for this important research project. Supercritical CO2 power cycle heat recovery is among the key strategies to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and limit CO2 emissions. We will do our best to assist Carleton University in this important research,” said VP on R&D, PSRE Co., Leonid Korelstein.

PASS Software Academic licenses are valid for one year from the time of approval and may only be used for non-commercial, academic purposes to teachers, researchers, and other faculty staff.  Academic licenses are provided free of charge in exchange for active work in research activities with publications (e.g., master and Ph.D. thesis) referencing the PASS Software Suite for Research Licenses or active use in teaching classes for Teaching Licenses.

About Carleton University

Carleton University is a public comprehensive university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1942 as Carleton College, a private, non-denominational evening college to serve returning World War II veterans, Carleton was chartered as a university by the provincial government in 1952 through The Carleton University Act, which was amended in 1957 to give the institution its current name. Carleton offers a diverse range of academic programs, and is organized into six faculties. It has several specialized institutions well-regarded in their fields, including the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs, the Carleton School of Journalism, the School of Public Policy and Administration, and the Sprott School of Business.
