Werfau Uses MagiCAD in Russian Government’s BIM Pilot Projects

MagiCAD_logoTURKU, Finland, Nov 12, 2015 – WERFAU Medical Engineering, a Saint Peterburg-based company specialising in the integrated design of medical facilities as well as turnkey cleanroom solutions, is working on three pilot projects to support the Russian Ministry of Construction in drafting a national plan for the utilisation of building information modelling (BIM) methods in building design. The drafting process includes a total of 23 BIM pilot projects across Russia.

MagiCAD software, developed by the Nordic software house Progman Oy, has been used for designing and modelling all HVAC, piping, electrical, and medical gas systems in the three pilot projects, including Werfau’s 150,000-square-meter project for the Krasnoyarsk Regional Clinical Hospital.

Werfau’s BIM pilot projects for the Russian government include a 150,000-square-meter flagship project with the Krasnoyarsk Regional Clinical Hospital (including dismantling, renovation, construction of new buildings and structures, and the construction of a new engineering and transport infrastructure), a 5200-square-meter centre for Palliative Care in Kolpino, and a 5790-square-meter emergency care unit for the Alexander City Hospital in Saint Petersburg.

BIM technologies improve the efficiency of building design exponentially

For designing and modelling the demanding HVAC, piping, electrical and specialist gas systems in the pilot projects, Werfau uses the MagiCAD software, which offers the Northern Europe’s leading Building Information Modelling technology for HVAC and electrical design.

“The standardisation process focuses especially on reducing the time required when checking and analysing the building design projects, with BIM increasing the overall project quality through automated check-up processes and the BIM model replacing much of the current documentation, lists and drawings,” comments head of BIM department Petr Manin from Werfau. Petr Manin holds a PhD in Computer Science and has been awarded as the BIM leader of the Year Russia 2014 by Autodesk.

“MagiCAD provides us with extensive databases of 3D MEP products from real manufacturers with full technical product properties. MagiCAD’s product properties enable us to perform automated check-up processes and calculations according to the Russian standards. With MagiCAD, we can visualise the systems in 3D and check for collisions. All of this improves the quality of our building services design immensely, and at the same time, saves our time by approximately 20% per project,” says Petr Manin.

“All in all, the use of BIM methods enables many important benefits. For example, automated collision control has in the pilot projects made the validation stage over six times faster compared to finding errors manually. In the pilot projects, automation enabled all errors to be found and fixed in approximately half a day, when finding and fixing 85 percent of errors manually would have required approximately 3 days,” Petr Manin says.

“For example, in the Krasnoyarsk Regional Clinical Hospital project, there are around 100 different check-ups which must be carried out to verify the minimum room sizes and other requirements as stipulated by Russian National Building Standards. There are 700 different kinds of rooms and 4000 rooms in total in the project. Needless to say, when all of the check-up processes can be automated and run using a single button whenever needed, the amount of work hours saved in a single project is astronomical,” Petr Manin continues.
