Solair Joins Eclipse Foundation, Partners with Kura

Solair_logoCASALECCHIO DI RENO, Italy, Mar 9, 2015 – Solair has joined the Eclipse Foundation, an open source community with millions of users focused on building an open development platform. It is a non-profit foundation that through its projects helps cultivate an open source community and an ecosystem of complementary products and services.

Joining Eclipse has led Solair to work actively with the foundation’s IoT Working Group, the Kura project. Kura is a Java/OSGi-based framework for IoT gateways that can connect next generation smart devices over the cloud and transform them into intelligent devices. Deploying and configuring one device to act as a node in the Internet of Things is relatively easy. Doing the same for hundreds or thousands of devices is not so easy though. This is where the new Eclipse project Kura comes in.

“We chose Kura because we were motivated by our mission to offer end-to-end IoT solutions to our customers,” explains Tom Davis, CEO of Solair. “Kura is one of a kind: it gives us the tools to develop high level applications above our gateway. In practice, it means that we can develop on a low-level on devices and allows us to have a more vertical and upward application development. We are one of the pioneers using Kura and this means that we can work closely with the developers for a continuous dialogue and exchange of information. We want to continue to contribute and invest in projects by companies that simplify the implementation of IoT technology.”

“Having Solair as a member of the Eclipse Foundation means taking another step towards the diffusion of IoT open source projects,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation. “We need to continue to support partnerships of this kind because the IoT will be implemented using open-source software platforms, there is no other way because of the intrinsic characteristics of scalability and interoperability, and because developers today require open source solutions and tools.”

The result of the partnership between Solair and Kura will be announced very soon with the launch of the new Solair IoT gateway.
