Rhode Island University Honors Hexagon President, CEO Taylor

Taylor will be recognized with an honorary doctorate from the University of Rhode Island at its 2015 Commencement ceremony in May.The honorary degree is the highest honor bestowed by the University and is reserved to recognize true distinction. Mr. Taylor will receive a Doctor of Business to acknowledge his unique contributions to the University and to the State of Rhode Island.

AngusCFTaylorTaylor is a distinguished global leader and has been a passionate advocate for dual language immersion programs while at the helm of Hexagon Metrology North America. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Central Lancashire, formerly Preston Polytechnic, in the UK. Angus started his profession as a project engineer working for a subsidiary of Brown & Sharpe, a prominent Rhode Island manufacturing company (now Hexagon Metrology). He shaped his career by assuming greater levels of responsibility in both technical and international business roles.

“On behalf of the State of Rhode Island’s premier public research institution, we are proud to award Mr. Taylor the Doctor of Business, honoris causa during our 129th Commencement ceremony,” said URI Provost and vice president of Academic Affairs Donald H. DeHayes who chairs the Honorary Degree Committee. “The University’s highest honor is awarded in recognition of Angus’ leadership in business and engineering, as well as his extraordinary commitment to advancing language immersion programs within public schools. He has also been a very strong advocate for our College of Engineering’s International Engineering Program, where his forward-thinking global business practices set clear examples for our young engineers,” said DeHayes.

He has worked closely with URI leaders to highlight the human resource requirements of growing global companies like Hexagon Metrology, and the need to recruit multi-lingual engineering talent. This collaboration helps URI IEP to better prepare students for the international workplace, ensuring they have not only the necessary technical skills, but the critical language and cultural training required in today’s job market.

Taylor also champions URI IEP’s initiatives through the Rhode Island Language Roadmap (RILR), a project backed by committed leaders in business, government, and education supporting an ambitious plan to implement K-12 dual language immersion in Rhode Island public schools. Angus has passionately advocated for this cause by giving testimonial to the Rhode Island Senate Finance Committee, as well as hosting and speaking at several Business Incubator events around the state.

Hexagon Metrology has hired several URI IEP graduates who are involved, along with other employees, in these initiatives. Taylor has served as a guest speaker at several URI IEP-related events including the Annual Colloquium on International Engineering Education, the official launch of the RILR program, and various leadership conferences.
