PTC to Expand Vuforia Platform with Remote Presence Capability

SANTA CLARA, CA, June 1, 2017 – PTC announced from Augmented World Expo that the Vuforia platform, the most widely used software platform for augmented reality (AR) application development, will expand to include a new remote presence capability for developers, consumers, and businesses.

Vuforia Project Chalk will bring a new dimension of interactivity to a video call, in which one person can digitally annotate another’s physical environment. The result is one person can provide guidance to another from a remote location with similar effectiveness as being in the same physical space.

Project Chalk will enable people of all ages to complete unfamiliar or challenging tasks with guidance from friends, family, colleagues, and professionals. For example, busy parents can assist children with homework or projects at home, do-it-your-selfers can get assistance from each other or a local handyman, and families with aging members can provide guidance to overcome everyday challenging tasks.

Additionally, Project Chalk will enable a wide range of mobile workers – from service technicians to sales personnel – to troubleshoot and solve problems with increased ease, speed, and accuracy.

“We see Project Chalk as a fundamentally disruptive form of remote communication that will be well received across multiple sectors and for multiple use cases,” said Eric Abbruzzese, principal analyst, ABI Research. “We envision this capability being used beyond the enterprise on everyday devices across platforms.”

Project Chalk uses proven computer vision technologies in the Vuforia platform to deliver a breakthrough experience across a wide range of phones, tablets, and digital eyewear. Developers will be able to incorporate Project Chalk capabilities in existing Vuforia-powered applications for iOS, Android, and Windows using Vuforia SDKs. Additionally, Project Chalk will be made available as a standalone application via app stores. The application will support a freemium model with plans for both personal and business use.

“Vuforia Project Chalk will deliver a new mode of communication with the potential to improve our personal and professional lives,” said Jay Wright, president, Vuforia. “While we understand its use for helping others, Project Chalk will also enable a new generation of AR applications for people to create digital content to be shared on the physical world.”

Vuforia Project Chalk is expected to be available for developers in Vuforia SDKs, and for consumers and businesses via app stores in Fall 2017. For more information about Project Chalk, please visit www.vuforia.com/projectchalk.
