PRC Format Gets ISO Standard

prostep_logoDARMSTADT, Germany, Apr 20, 2015 – The 3D viewing format PRC (Product Representation Compact) was recently published as ISO 14739-1:2014 and is now an international standard (IS). PRC is used, among other things, to embed 3D models from common CAD systems in 3D PDF documents and visualize them using Adobe Reader. It also supports the exchange of 3D model data in document-based workflows, such as requests for proposals or changes for example.

Unlike the tessellated U3D format, which can also be embedded in 3D PDFs, PRC can be used not only for tessellated representation but also as an accurate, highly compressed format that can be extracted again as a STEP file for further processing in the supply chain. It describes the embedded 3D models as exact solids, so-called B-REPs or boundary representations.

Publication and standardization of the PRC format provides a high level of investment protection to companies that decide to use 3D PDF technology. At the same time, their intellectual property remains available as they can access the models again at any time independently of a specific software vendor and its IT tools.

“ISO standardization is an important step towards achieving the long-term use of 3D PDF technology in companies in the manufacturing industry,” stresses Peter Pfalzgraf, head of the products business unit at PROSTEP AG. PROSTEP’s PDF Generator 3D is the only server solution based on original Adobe LiveCycle technology.
