The new hyperMILL and hyperCAD-S versions feature numerous improvements and enhancements. Among the highlights, the main attraction is a processing strategy which speeds up Z-level finishing so significantly that the time required to machine can be reduced by up to 90 percent. Further features include a new rest material strategy, a new user interface for mill-turning, as well as highlights in the CAD for CAM system hyperCAD-S.

By challenging conventional thinking, it helps its customers achieve yet another significant competitive advantage gain. The result:hyperMILL MAXX Machining, an optional performance package introduced with version 2016.1. The modules in this bundle contain extremely powerful performance strategies for roughing, finishing and drilling. In addition to the tried and true functionality offered by hyperMAXX, the roughing module includes a solution for high-performance cutting (HPC) with trochoidal tool movements. New features are the spiral opening cut and automatic feedrate adjustment for improved arc cutting conditions. Innovative strategies included in the finishing module exploit the full potential of barrel cutters. The third hyperMILL MAXX Machining module is the further development of ‘5-axis helical drilling’ with machine movements that provides efficient material removal and chip evacuation using 5-axis motion compared to high power required when using large drills.
Mega-highlight: Finishing in record time
Z-level finishing has been considered technically mature for decades. The often very long processing times to obtain high quality surfaces were deemed acceptable. OPEN MIND was not satisfied with the times that could be achieved and developed a new solution. This process forms part of the finishing module in hyperMILL MAXX Machining. High-efficiency preliminary finishing and finishing of planes and free form surfaces with various barrel cutters becomes possible for the first time with the new solution. The innovative CAM strategy for ‘5axis tangent plane machining’ realises the full potential of conical barrel cutters: time savings of up to 90 percent in comparison to machining with ball mill cutters are possible. There is also great potential in tool and mould making as well as for aviation and aerospace, where numerous different planes often require machining. Hard to reach areas such as deep and narrow cavities can be processed with very high efficiency thanks to the new ‘5-axis tangent plane machining’ and the conical barrel cutter.
New cycle: 3D-optimised rest material
The new rest material cycle generates HSC-optimised toolpaths for rest machining. Intelligent filtering options and new algorithms make a shorter calculation time and better surface possible.
Defining and managing mill turning cutting tool reference using the tool database is more convenient. Cutting inserts can also be defined in the tool database using the ANSI/ISO code, so that standardised tools can be created more quickly according to specifications. A revised user interface for mill turning also makes work easier. The cycles for finishing, roughing, grooving and parting are arranged in a menu window.
New product: CAD viewer
The hyperCAD-S viewer – an independent system – can in future be used for the fast and straightforward viewing of model data. This viewer supports all common file formats such as CATIA, PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor, STL, and many more. The viewer is primarily used in departments that do not require a complete CAD system, for example in job planning or quote calculation.
Fast preparation of shape contours
The outline curves of a face or component can be created quickly and easily with the new function. This function can be applied to surface models as well as solid models. Contours for subsequent CAM machining can be created more quickly.
Major further improvements have been made to the sketcher in regards to user friendliness. It now offers new functionality for easily drawing design sketches. Mini dialogue boxes allow you to enter desired design values. You can also select common design dependencies using the sketcher, such as vertical, horizontal and tangential as well as angle and parallelism dependencies. This function can be applied to existing curves and faces also.
New mesh functionality
Naturally hyperCAD-S also works with meshes in addition to curves, faces and solids. Four new functions have been added for preparing meshes: separating joined meshes, smoothing mesh surfaces, reducing mesh density and closing holes in meshes.
