Onshape Launches Online Learning Center

CAMBRIDGE, MA, May 25, 2017 – Onshape, the leading professional 3D CAD platform for Agile Product Design, has introduced a self-guided online Learning Center for experienced engineers and designers to speed up their transition from traditional desktop-installed CAD to full-cloud CAD. Access to the Onshape Learning Center is free for all annual Professional Plan subscribers.

The new Onshape Learning Center gives engineers and designers an online crash course in the fundamental differences and similarities between traditional file-based CAD systems and full-cloud Onshape, the only CAD system enabling multiple design team members to simultaneously work on the same 3D model.

The new curricula offerings, or Learning Pathways, are broken down into short introductory courses with practice exercises that CAD professionals can complete at their own pace and also revisit later. The Learning Center was created as an alternative onboarding option to Onshape’s popular live interactive Overview Training, which is comprised of four daily two-hour online sessions with an expert Onshape instructor.

“Even though Onshape has a very quick learning curve for anyone with a 3D parametric CAD background, we’re finding that giving customers a crash course in how full-cloud CAD differs from installed file-based CAD gets them up and running faster versus them trying to learn it by themselves,” says David Katzman, director of Onshape Customer Success. “The Learning Center is the ideal place to make sure your design team is production ready.”

“People have different learning styles. The online courses will appeal to those who want more structured time to practice and who require more flexibility with their schedules. And the live training will still be available for those who prefer to interact with Onshape instructors,” he adds.

The first two Learning Pathways are:

  • Onshape Fundamentals: CAD – These courses focus on CAD functionality with an emphasis on the differences between 3D modeling in Onshape versus traditional desktop-installed CAD systems. Topics include: Onshape Documents, sketching, simultaneous editing, modeling parts in Part Studios, creating assemblies with Onshape’s high-level mates, and detailing production-ready 2D drawings. (Note: This Pathway does not teach basic CAD skills and is aimed at professionals with a background in parametric modeling.)
  • Onshape Fundamentals: Data Management – These courses focus on Onshape’s unique approach to managing CAD data in the cloud, including: Document organization tools, import and export options, sharing Documents with collaborators, using Document edit history and version control, branching and merging workspaces, and best practices for using Linked Documents.

CAD professionals will receive a completion certificate after finishing each Learning Pathway. According to Customer Success manager Noa Flaherty, upcoming self-guided courses will address advanced topics such as In-Context Editing and Simultaneous Sheet Metal Tools.

“We’re constantly learning from and listening to our customers, setting our priorities based on their wants and needs,” Flaherty says. “We’re excited to help accelerate their productivity in Onshape and expect these courses to play a major role in their success.”

Dave Speight, co-founder of Scaled, a British startup focusing on additive manufacturing, praised the Learning Center’s approach to getting his company ready to use Onshape. Speight recently completed both Learning Pathways during early visibility testing.

“I found the courses engaging. There wasn’t information overload and the material was presented in digestible, bite-sized sections,” he says. “For anyone joining our company, I’d want them to do this training right away to give them the proper framework. As our company scales, I want my design team to learn how to be as efficient as possible in Onshape.”
