Japanese Manabe Zoki Selects MSC Apex for Crane Design

NEWPORT BEACH, CA, June 27, 2017 – MSC Software Corporation today announced that Manabe Zoki Company Limited has selected MSC Apex as their tool of choice for the efficient product development of heavy lift cranes. Manabe Zoki is a leading manufacturer of deck cranes and winches for vessels.

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for efficient utilization of deck space and improvement in cargo handling, along with the diversification of cargo. Manabe Zoki is developing “Japan’s first 500-ton deck crane” for high efficiency and energy savings for both heavy and general cargo.

MSC Apex is the next generation CAE platform that provides engineers with a new simulation process, enhanced with a fully integrated modeling tool. Analysis results are automatically updated with geometry changes, thus greatly reducing simulation time. In addition, the application interactively evaluates the model validity and completeness to prevent downstream analysis error.

By implementing MSC Apex, design engineers can easily identify problem areas and fine-tune their design to achieve critical performance criteria. In addition, with the integration of geometry tools in Apex, users no longer rely on a CAD system to create geometry and iterate on part designs. This helps to reduce the number of product design iterations and bring in simulation earlier in the design cycle.

In order to improve the efficiency of design for a heavy lift crane with the lifting capacity of 500 tons, the Manabe Zoki team needed an accurate structural analysis tool. As a result, Manabe evaluated MSC Apex’s easy-to-learn and easy-to-use CAE platform and its unique design environment. With the introduction of MSC Apex, Manabe aims to shorten the design time and cost.

“With conventional software, it took time to model the structure for analysis, but we expect that introducing MSC Apex will increase work efficiency by at least 30%.” said Tomomi Kihara, general manager (Deck Crane Group – Technical Department) at Manabe Zoki Company Limited.

“We are very pleased that MSC Apex will be very helpful in improving the efficiency of Manabe through its high-precision analysis and friendly GUI” said Michi Egawa, manager of MSC Apex Business Development.
