itSeez3D Updates Occipital Structure Sensor 3D Scanner iPad App

itSeez3D_logoSAN JOSE, CA, Feb 9, 2015 – itSeez3D, a leading developer of mobile scanning software, has developed an update to its 3D scanner application. Designed to work with the world’s first 3D sensor for mobile devices, Occipital Structure Sensor, itSeez3D now allows the iPad to create realistic full-body models from 3D scans.

The new technology provides a convenient tool for the 3D printing industry, allowing for the scanning of a color figurine model in less than a couple of minutes. Additionally, the updated app provides an option of scanning more than 50 percent higher resolution textures.

So how does it work? The iPad app uses the Structure Sensor to collect 3D data of a scanned object, as well as the iPad’s RGB camera to collect images from multiple viewpoints. It then reconstructs the object’s shape online to provide visual feedback and guide the user through the scanning process. Once scanning is complete, the app sends all data over to the cloud, where an algorithm stitches 3D point clouds and RGB images from multiple viewpoints into a single color 3D model that is then sent back to the iPad. This model can be printed with one of the color 3D printers available on the market.

According to Victor Erukhimov, CEO, itSeez, the need for 3D printing is on the rise, noting he has seen a demand from industries that create people’s figurines, virtual clothing and medical applications, including scanning for plastic surgery.

“itSeez3D provides a fast and easy way to capture a very realistic color model of a human body,” Erukhimov said. “We have invested a lot of thinking into making our cloud service convenient for integration with 3D printing and other practical use cases. We also believe there is a lot of potential for full body scanning in the entertainment industry. Eventually, 3D photos will become as essential as 2D photos are today.”

Since its initial launch, itSeez3D has seen increased interest from the 3D printing community. Starting in December, the MediaMarkt consumer electronic stores began offering customers the chance to create a high-quality, 3D printed color figurine. This project, implemented by DIG:ED, a leading company for digitalizing analog media in the German-speaking area, uses itSeez3D as its scanning solution.

The new version of the itSeez3D app is available for download in the App Store. The app is free for non-commercial use. Business customers are charged per printed model.
