European MEPcontent Standard Available

MEPcontent_logoBODEGRAVEN, The Netherlands, Dec 1, 2014 – At the sector event BIM LIVE|SUM 2014 on November 25, 2014 Stabiplan launched the European MEPcontent Standard (EMCS). Five hundred MEP engineers, project managers and representatives of manufacturers, industry partners, installation companies and building managers witnessed the handing over of the standard to Henk de Bruijn, sales manager at Nefit.

120114_MEPcontent_14Publicatie_EMCSIn combination with the platform mepcontent.eu, the European MEPcontent Standard is the answer to the question of MEP engineers and manufacturers for uniform and classified content for the building services industry in Europe. Stabiplan wants to share its knowledge on MEP and content for MEP because the building services industry is a dedicated business that deserves its own standards. This should be done on a European level: a country specific approach is too fragmented and not future-proof. Besides that a European approach matches the practice where manufacturers do not limit their product lines to a single country.

Quality and Reliability

High quality content has to comply with a set of rules. These rules guarantee that the families are consistent, will behave correctly in a Revit project and contain the relevant information. That’s why the European MEPcontent Standard provide:

  • Naming conventions;
  • Rules about the main properties of a family (Revit category, host);
  • Rules about using parameters;
  • Rules about creating the geometry/representation;
  • Rules about connectors;
  • Rules about classification data and supporting external standards.

EMCS complies as much as possible with existing standards and guidelines, both from Autodesk (Autodesk Content Style Guide) and Dutch and European standardization organizations (e.g. ETIM, COBie, VDI 3805, ISO 16757). They use the families in the Revit MEP Content Library (the family library that’s included in a Revit MEP installation) as a source of knowledge on how to build high quality families.

The EMSC is currently used and tested in the field as the guiding principle when families are created in MEPcontent’s content factory and as a guideline for checking if third party content is suitable to publish on MEPcontent.

Open Standard

Just like the open platform of MEPcontent, EMCS is an open standard that can be used by everyone.Every family that is published in accordance with EMCS can be used in Revit 2014 and later, but also in applications that run on top of the Revit platform, like Stabicad.

Moreover, the standard is already available and can be downloaded for free on www.mepcontent.eu/emcs and engineers can start designing immediately using families that meet the EMCS.

Dynamic and transparent

From now on, more and more content on MEPcontent.eu will meet the EMCS. That’s why Stabiplan works closely with manufacturers and engineers. The possibilities of content are ever increasing and therefore the EMCS needs to be complemented and permanently improved with input from the industry. To be able to build the best content together and therefore the best MEP systems in the world, Stabiplan invites engineers and manufacturers to provide feedback on the EMCS. In this way EMCS contributes to the new way of sharing knowledge, which will change and improve the industry viaBIM.
