BROOMFIELD, CO, Nov 1, 2016 – Innovyze, a leading global innovator of business analytics software and technologies for smart wet infrastructure, today announced that the City of Salem Department of Public Works, Oregon, has chosen Innovyze’s industry-leading InfoWater Suite and InfoWater UDF Suite software as its advanced water distribution modeling solution. The decision helps the City leverage its investment in ArcGIS technology from Esri (Redlands, CA) by giving it the most technologically advanced GIS-centric software platform available for operating and managing its drinking water transmission and distribution system.
Salem, the capital of Oregon, is located in the heart of the Willamette Valley and serves a population of 191,000 daily from the North Santiam River Watershed. The City also uses groundwater and its Aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) system as a backup water supply when its surface water supply is not adequate to meet demands due to limitations on water quantity or quality. The City’s water system includes a slow-sand filtration water treatment plant, 22 operating pump stations, 19 reservoirs, approximately 739 miles of pipeline, and both groundwater and ASR wells.
“The Innovyze InfoWater software suite is a perfect fit for our needs,” says Keith Garlinghouse, P.E., P.L.S., utilities engineer for Salem. It gives us the ability to build, calibrate and analyze detailed dynamic models of our water system in the fastest possible time — all while working in the ArcGIS environment. We can then leverage our modeling work using the InfoWater UDF suite module to create detailed flushing sequences and easily manage a unidirectional flushing program for our entire service area. These tools will help us improve our water system maintenance and operations and enhance water quality and customer service.”
Built atop ArcGIS and winner of the coveted ArcGIS for Desktop Based Application Award, InfoWater seamlessly integrates sophisticated network modeling, predictive analytics, systems dynamics, business planning, and optimization functionality directly within the powerful ArcGIS setting. From fire flow and dynamic water quality simulations, valve criticality and energy cost analysis to pressure zone management and advanced Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm optimization, the software comes equipped with everything water utility owner-operators need to best plan, design, operate, secure and sustain their water transmission and distribution systems.
InfoWater UDF, which runs on the InfoWater platform, allows utilities to quickly develop a comprehensive, reliable and cost-effective unidirectional flushing program. This technique has been proven to help improve water quality by restoring disinfectant residual, reducing bacterial regrowth, dislodging biofilms, removing sediments and deposits, controlling corrosion, restoring flows and pressures, eliminating taste and odor problems, and reducing disinfectant demand throughout the system.
The software accurately considers the temporal variation in flow velocity magnitude and direction caused by changes in demands, tank levels and operating conditions. It also computes minimum flushing time, total flushing volume and pipe length, flushing velocity and shear stress for every pipe in the sequence, and available flow at the minimum residual pressure. The hydraulic impact of each flushing sequence is monitored to ensure the desired minimum pressure is maintained throughout the system. The software then generates detailed reports of flushing sequences showing which fire hydrants and water main valves should be manipulated to assure optimal cleaning. Both minimum velocity and minimum shear stress criteria can be specified.
“Our smart water modeling and management solutions are unrivaled in design, innovation, functionality, computational speed, and quality,” said Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D., BCEEM, Hon.D.WRE, Dist.D.NE, Dist.M.ASCE, NAE, president, COO and chief innovation officer of Innovyze. “We are delighted that the City of Salem has made us a partner of choice in its continued pursuit of engineering excellence and environmental stewardship. It reconfirms that using our advanced modeling technology is the most cost-effective way to bolster water system operations today and make better plans for the future.”
