CAD Exchanger v3.9.0 Released

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia, Oct 14, 2020 – CAD Exchanger announces the release of CAD Exchanger 3.9.0 — a toolset for 3D CAD software developers and end-users.

CATIA import

CAD Exchanger 3.9.0 features:

  • CATIA V5 import
  • DWG import
  • U3D import
  • 3D model simplification add-on

CATIA V5 import

CATIA (Computer-Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application) is a multi-platform solution by Dassault Systemes, covering all stages of the product development. CAD Exchanger 3.9.0 reads B-Rep geometry made in CATIA V5 R20 – R29, supporting parts (.catpart) and assembly (.catproduct) files.

DWG import

DWG is a proprietary format of 2D and 3D drawings created with AutoCAD. From the 3.9.0 release, CAD Exchanger supports DWG 2013 and DWG 2018 objects’ product structure, geometry (B-Reps and meshes), and colors.

U3D import in PDF

U3D import

U3D (Universal 3D) is a format used to embed 3D interactive data and models into a PDF file. CAD Exchanger 3.9.0 enables software developers and end-users to import U3D files.

3D model simplification

In 3.9.0 release, a new SDK/add-on – 3D Model Simplifier – was added. It includes algorithms for B-Rep simplification and polygonal geometry decimation. In the case of meshes, the 3D Model Simplifier is able to reduce the number of triangles by 100x while preserving the overall look and shape. For B-Reps, it implies removing its holes, small, and invisible bodies.

Other highlights

Additional Unity plug-in features

Unity is a game engine that powers VR/AR applications. Release 3.9.0 incorporates the following improvements of CAD files import to Unity:

  • Assigning custom shader to the imported model
  • Scaling the model during the import process
  • Sharing of materials and textures, instead of duplicating them
  • Reduced memory footprint of Unity’s GameObject creation
  • Enhanced conversion of materials’ appearances

Mesh decimation

SOLIDWORKS mesh import enhancement

Within CAD Exchanger 3.9.0 release, reading of lightweight polygonal representations is available for SOLIDWORKS 2012 and 2013.

Linux and macOS usability improvement

CAD Exchanger GUI is now signed with an Apple certificate. And CAD Exchanger 3.9.0. in general provides more streamlined installation on Linux and macOS.

Validation properties improvement

During the conversion, the CAD Exchanger algorithm compares properties in the output and input systems to verify the conversion correctness through so-called validation properties.

CAD Exchanger 3.9.0 incorporates the following validation properties enhancements:

  • More precise calculation of the bounding boxes from B-Rep representations
  • API for computing the volume of meshes
