Blohm+Voss Selects Siemens’ Integrated PLM for Shipbuilding

siemenslogoMUNICH, Germany, Nov 18, 2015 – German shipbuilder Blohm+Voss selected Siemens’ integrated suite of product lifecycle management (PLM) software solutions to support its entire ship design, engineering and construction processes. The holistic approach to shipbuilding delivered by the Siemens PLM Software business was the determining factor in the shipyard’s decision to replace its previous software with Siemens’ specialized shipbuilding solution, including its Teamcente portfolio and NX software. Working in conjunction with SGP Management Consultants GmbH, Blohm+Voss judged the Siemens PLM software solution as superior to several other specialized shipbuilding software offerings evaluated during their comprehensive selection process.

“The experience of our engineering and construction workforce is the main reason our shipyard has been in the position to develop and deliver some of the most bespoken Mega Yachts in the last decade.” said Peer Ostendorff, director engineering of  Blohm+Voss. “By  supporting our processes with Siemens’ integrated PLM software solutions, we are taking the crucial next step to further enhance our employees’ ability to meet in an efficient and effective way the increasing requirements of Mega Yacht customers . This system will enable us to optimize our overall performance by bundling steel construction, equipment and engineering processes in one single source solution.”

Blohm+Voss will use NX, Siemens’ integrated 3D computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering analysis (CAD/CAM/CAE) solution, to establish and optimize an integrated product development environment. Specific software modules designed for the shipbuilding industry will help enhance total enterprise collaboration, synchronization and productivity as well as ship service and support. Additionally, utilization of Teamcenter, Siemens’ comprehensive digital lifecycle management solution, provides a fast and easy method for instantly accessing relevant information for rapid evaluation, decision making and re-use of proven best practices to mitigate potential risks and eliminate program delays.

Siemens’ shipbuilding software solution, including Teamcenter and NX, is designed to operate as a seamlessly integrated PLM system that enables the shipyard to cover the entire performance portfolio. The open architecture of Siemens’ PLM solutions enables a successive implementation and modular integration of the new software. Current projects thus can be seamlessly transferred to the new system without technical interruption, data loss or downtimes. In addition to the software licenses, the implementation process will be accompanied by specialized shipbuilding software training by Siemens experts, and certified PLM software training classes offered by NeXeo, a Siemens authorized training partner.

“The Shipbuilding industry faces intense global competition, price pressure and operational requirements,” said Kirk Gutmann, senior vice president, Industry Strategy, Siemens PLM Software. “Optimizing design, engineering and construction processes is the main step in meeting those challenges and reaching better overall performance. Combining all processes into a fully integrated software offering underlines the success of our PLM industry software solutions. And nowhere is this more relevant than in the shipbuilding industry. By bringing all the right product information together into automated processes, Blohm+Voss can better synchronize efforts, increase productivity and achieve greater innovation.”
