Australia’s Curtin University to Use ASt Scan to BIM Service

astLogoPERTH, Australia, Apr 1, 2015 – Advanced Spatial technologies Pty Ltd (ASt) a leading provider of CAD, BIM services, International FM:Systems partner, and Autodesk AEC partner, announced Curtin University has selected ASt to provide ‘Scan to BIM’ services for the development of accurate building models for the Curtin University Bentley Campus academic core, in Western Australia.

040115_AStASt was selected for their cost effective, quality production of BIM’s, using best practice workflows to deliver accurate building models to Curtin University’s specifications. ASt used the ‘FILOR3D’ survey company to provide high quality color laser scans, point cloud files, and Recap files which were used by ASt’s ‘BIMWest’ division to produce accurate ‘Revit’ based building models.

In close liaison with the Properties Facilities and Development team at Curtin University, this project is project managed by ASt to ensure minimal site disruption and a timely programmed continuous delivery of building models to the university. “This is a model project for any future ‘Scan to BIM’ project, to produce cost effective and accurate models, for ongoing lifecycle requirements of existing buildings”, said Don Hitchcock Project director at ASt.

The Project

Curtin University intends to fully utilize ‘BIM’ and associated analysis tools, to increase efficiency and productivity compared to using 2D AutoCAD drawings as the MASTER documentation to manage their site. They have determined the most cost effective way to retro-fit existing structures into BIM, is to ‘Laser Scan’ the buildings and produce accurate ‘Revit’ based Building Models from the Point cloud files. The ‘Revit’ models would become the ‘source of truth’ data, for its planning, development, capital works and operational maintenance groups. The first step was to conduct a campus wide survey to produce ‘external’ building models of all Bentley Campus Buildings. The models produced for their multi-story buildings are located to GDA94 (PCG94), AHD heights and inclusive of external building fabric, roof, and finished floor levels. Autodesk ‘Navisworks’ is also used by Curtin University Properties Facilities and Development staff to view and analyze the building models.
