Quantapoint Wins FIATECH CETI Award for Laser Models
PITTSBURGH,
PA, Apr 4, 2008 - Quantapoint – provider of laser scanning technology and
services that helps companies achieve Zero-Defect Projects – today announced
that its Laser Model technology was recognized by FIATECH as a significant
technological achievement that will provide benefits to the capital projects
industry. Quantapoint is celebrating this award, our revolutionary Laser
Model technology and the release of the next generation of laser scanning
software at the ArCH Center in Houston on Friday, May 2, starting at 5:30
PM. To sign-up, click here.

Laser Models are a unique Quantapoint technology that integrates all laser
scan data to provide detailed, high-definition 3D solid “models” of a
facility. Laser Models offer clear advantages over older “point cloud”
technology, whose sparse data make it difficult to visualize or understand
the facility and more likely to miss critical design details. Some of the
key benefits offered by Laser Models include:
- Facility-centric: Laser Models enable users to simply select
the facility areas in which to work. They do not require loading
multiple memory-intensive laser scans or all laser data to work in an
area.
- Visually Clear: Laser Models are visually clear and actually
look like the facility. They are not “foggy” point clouds, which are
difficult to interpret and use because they do not look like the
facility.
- Dense Data: Laser Models are solid and include fine details.
Their dense data does not require spaces between the points. They are
not a picture overlaid on a point cloud, which may appear solid, but
does not provide more or more accurate measurement information.
- Smaller Files: Laser Models integrate redundant data while
verifying and preserving measurement accuracy. This results in file
sizes that are 10+ times smaller than the equivalent point clouds and
can be easily shared across a network.
- Integration: Laser Models may be accessed in various design
packages, such as AutoCAD, PDS and PDMS. They are accessible in true 3D
– not as a 2D background image – and may be rotated, zoomed, and clashed
against CAD models without leaving the design package.
- Broader Usage: The clarity of Laser Models not only makes
them more intuitive and helps drive design efficiency, but also offers
advantages for engineering and construction analyses. For example,
certifying tie points, verifying fabricated items and visualizing
construction.
FIATECH established the CETI (Celebration of Engineering & Technology
Innovation) awards to encourage innovative construction-related technologies
that benefit the industry. Quantapoint’s Laser Model technology has also
received awards from R&D Magazine and the Engineering and Construction
Contracting Association.
About Quantapoint
Quantapoint provides laser scanning technology and services that help our
clients achieve Zero-Defect Projects. We 'digitize' facilities using
patented laser scanning technology and then use our award-winning Laser
Model technology to create a high-resolution Digitized Facility that can be
accessed directly or within various CAD packages.
Quantapoint also provides analysis, quality control, documentation and
decision support services to eliminate the most common sources of
preventable project defects from across the project lifecycle. It is
Quantapoint’s unique combination of innovative laser scanning technology and
professional services that help our clients achieve Zero-Defect Projects,
beating project budgets and schedules by 15% or more and saving millions of
dollars and thousands of man-hours.
