PALO
ALTO, CA, May 27, 2009 - HP, together with the Institute for Advanced
Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC) today announced a global architectural
design contest aimed at emerging and professional architects and designers.
Under the theme of “Self-sufficient Cities,” the third annual
International Architecture Contest emphasizes the importance of innovation
for future environments. A jury of prominent leaders throughout the globe
including representatives of world cities, architecture schools, top
architects and engineers in addition to jurors from HP and the IaaC, will
look for compelling innovations that reflect the ecological and
technological needs of our future.
“We are pleased to collaborate with the IaaC through this contest and
allow architects, urbanists and designers from around the world the chance
to express their passion and bring sustainable development to the
forefront,” said Kelly Tan, vice president of marketing, Graphics Solutions
Business, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “HP is dedicated to providing
solutions that help large firms and independent professionals in the
technical industry redefine the future of design, help bring their visions
to life and enhance their work by leveraging HP’s large format printing and
imaging technology.”
To the contest winners, HP will provide the HP Designjet T Series
printers to produce high quality renderings and plans, both essential to
gain new customers as well as directing construction contractors. In
addition, HP will involve its extensive network of print service providers
to assist participants with design development. Two grand prize winners will
receive scholarships valued at €12,500 for a one year Masters program in
Advanced Architecture offered by IaaC. In addition, the winners also receive
a cash award of €3,000 for the winner, €2,000 for the second place and
€1,000 for third place.
From May 25th to September 28th, participants will be able to submit
their “Self-sufficient Cities” designs for Barcelona and cities throughout
the world via the IaaC
web site. The three finalists and overall winner will be announced
in November 2010.
The IaaC is a latest-generation education and research center with a

as a network to which specialists from a variety of disciplines (ecologists,
anthropologists, engineers, computer programmers, artists, sociologists and
others) interact with architects in the attaining of knowledge and skills
with which to develop advanced architecture. The Institute uses cutting-edge
