NOVI, MI and KRAILLING, Germany, Apr 2, 2008 - EOS will present its e-Manufacturing solutions for fast, flexible and cost-effective production from CAD data at the Hanover Fair from April 21st to 25th in Hanover, Germany. RapidX, a jointly sponsored event in Digital Factory, hall 17, will demonstrate how small series and batch-size products are manufactured using EOS technology-completely without tools and within just a few hours. The RapidX demonstration shows the entire product development chain from the idea to the end product. EOS will highlight different e‑Manufacturing applications in close collaboration with Hubtex, a specialist in industrial trucks.

RapidX completes the arc from the design study via ergonomic tests to the model—and finally to production—using e-Manufacturing. Hubtex is one of several partners participating in the initiative. The manufacturer of special trucks and side loaders relies on flexible production technologies such as e-Manufacturing in order to deliver one-offs, custom products and small series within very short timeframes.

One scenario at RapidX describes the path from the design study of an integrated steering wheel to ergonomic tests. The STL file of the model is then handed over to EOS, where the wheel is produced with e-Manufacturing. Conventional methods would require days or even weeks from concept to final product. Laser-sintering, however, delivers the steering wheel within hours. Furthermore, the wheel components are significantly reduced; where conventional methods require five parts, e‑Manufacturing builds the product in a single step, eliminating 100 percent of assembly time and costs. “e‑Manufacturing enables us to speed up our production processes and to manufacture much more flexibly,” says Achim Otterbein, manager design and development at Hubtex. Other best-practice examples and comparisons displayed at the booth further underscore the efficiency of the technology.

The growing demand for such complex components and individualized mass production (“mass customization”) is highlighted in a recently published EOS survey about the future prospects of e‑Manufacturing. According to the results, mass customization is gaining increasing importance in the Western world.

RapidX also includes “Guided Tours” conducted by experts. Participants will watch individual phases of the process chain with 3D glasses, and also experience the production process with e‑Manufacturing live. Representatives of the press are cordially invited to attend.

Other partners at RapidX are Autodesk, Gotha Design and Marketing, CADEXperience, ICIDO, E&H Formtechnik Entwicklung as well as SolidCAM. The initiative is led by the NC Gesellschaft.

About EOS

EOS was founded in 1989 and is today the world leading manufacturer of laser-sintering systems. Laser-sintering is the key technology for e-Manufacturing, the fast, flexible and cost-effective production of products, patterns or tools. The technology manufactures parts for every phase of the product life cycle, directly from electronic data. Laser-sintering accelerates product development and optimizes production processes. EOS completed its business year 2006/2007 with revenues of 59.7 million Euro, representing an increase of 14 percent compared to the previous year. The company employs more than 250 people worldwide, more than 200 of them at its headquarters in Krailling near Munich, Germany.
