Datakit to Provide STEP Based Data Exchange to LOTAR Group
LYON, France,
Jun 15, 2009 - Datakit has been asked to work with the LOTAR group to extend
the STEP norm for the needs of long-term CAD data archiving. Datakit,
already a member of many forums specialized on the topic, will bring in its
competencies regarding the CAD world, with emphasis on PMI.
Datakit has long been on the scene of STEP-based data exchange. STEP,
which is dedicated to CAD data exchange, is recognized within industry
worldwide, and used by many standardization organizations and implementation
forums, particularly CAx-IF, which is ruled by two organizations: ProSTEP
for Germany (which Datakit is a member of) and PDES Inc for the USA (which
is referencing Datakit). Datakit is an active CAx-IF forum member, enabling
Datakit to be as close as possible to the users, facilitating awareness of
upcoming advancements, and encouraging collaboration with the other members
to have access to reliable and efficient STEP exchanges.
For a long time Datakit has taken interest in CAD data archiving, an
unavoidable strategic topic in the industry. Datakit provided its point of
view as a data-exchange solution vendor in forums and organization
frameworks such as Micado and Galia. For Datakit, the STEP standard has many
qualities for data archiving. Christian Caillet, STEP specialist at Datakit,
explains: “The STEP standard potential is under used as a long-term data
archiving solution. It is indeed very formalized; its main interest is its
ability to be read, even decades after, independently of a specific software
or a specific hardware, and to be open enough to be enriched according to
needs.” The STEP standard is already used worldwide in the aircraft and
automotive industry. According to Christian Caillet, STEP is a very powerful
solution; it is universal, extensible, and complete.
Attracted by Datakit’s involvement in the STEP area and by its
proficiency in the CAD data exchange domain, Airbus asked Datakit to take
part in the LOTAR (LOng Term Archiving and Retention) workgroup, in
correlation with the CAx-IF forum. The goal of this workgroup is to define
an internationally accepted data archiving standard, associated with
reference definitions, quality criteria and use recommendations. The present
workgroup is primarily focused on 3D models, assemblies, graphics and PMI.
The LOTAR workgroup’s principal criteria for choosing Datakit are its
abilities with regard to PMI semantics. In collaboration with other vendors,
the Datakit Company is going to define the mapping between STEP and CAD data
in this area (mainly UG NX, Catia V5 and Pro/Engineer).
Similar to its involvement with CAx-IF, Datakit expects, by its
involvement in the LOTAR workgroup, to become acknowledged by the CAD
community in the domain of long-term archiving based on STEP, especially due
to its expertise in the matter of PMI.
