NASA Kennedy Space Center's Jon Cowart to Keynote at CMSC

NC, Apr 22, 2008 - The Coordinate Metrology Society, the eminent membership
association for measurement professionals, today announced Mr. Jon Cowart,
NASA Kennedy Space Center, will be the Keynote Speaker for the 24th Annual
Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC). from July 21-25, 2008 at the
new Embassy Suites overlooking Lowes Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. While
visiting the heart of NASCAR country, the conference will also feature an
Educational Tour at the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) complex. This 5-day
event is the only North American conference that uniquely serves
professional and novice users of portable 3D coordinate measurement
technology.Keynote Speaker Jon Coward of the NASA Kennedy Space Center
Shuttle Program will present "From Columbia to Constellation: How Laser
Scanning is Being Used". Mr. Cowart will discuss the contribution of laser
scanning and imagery techniques that were important to the Kennedy Space
Center’s Columbia reconstruction effort. Scanning and survey techniques play
an important role both on-orbit to safeguard the Shuttle and at KSC as they
prepare to reconfigure the interior of the Vehicle Assembly Building to
support the new Ares rockets set to debut in 2009. Cowart has a long
distinguished career with NASA and the U.S. Air Force. He is the Manager of
the Orbiter Project Office at KSC representing the Orbiter Project Office at
the Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.
The 2008 Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference will also feature an
exciting educational tour at the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) complex.
Attendees will get to tour the entire enterprise from the Engine, Chassis,
and Fabrication Shops to the Childress Vineyards. A highlight of the tour
will be the RCR Racing Museum. Inside this 47,000 sq.ft. building, there are
47 race vehicles and a tractor-trailer transporter rig. Sixteen video
screens showcase key victories in RCR history, and informational pieces
hosted by Richard Childress and RCR's managerial staff. Numerous displays,
memorabilia and photographs can be found throughout the facility, including
all six NASCAR Winston Cup championship banners and all six NASCAR Winston
Cup championship owner's trophies. Richard Childress Racing has earned
nearly 180 victories and 11 NASCAR championships, including the 2007 NASCAR
Nationwide Series owners’ point title and six in the Cup Series with the
legendary Dale Earnhardt.
The CMSC is comprised of white papers presented by expert users from
leading companies and universities, informative workshops, user group
meetings, and a large Exhibitor Hall showcasing portable coordinate
measurement systems (PCMMs), software, accessories, peripherals, inspection
and measurement service providers. PCMM technology exhibited at the
conference includes industrial photogrammetry solutions, laser trackers,
laser radars, GPS systems, laser scanners, laser projection systems,
articulating arms, theodolites and more. More than forty exhibitors
participated at the 2007 conference.
Conference attendees hail from science/research laboratories, and diverse
industries such as aerospace, space hardware, antenna, automotive,
shipbuilding, power generation, and general engineering.
