Tekla Structures, CAD-Duct Integrated for
BIM Data Exchange
ESPOO,
Finland,
Aug 5, 2009 - Tekla Structures software and CAD-Duct software by Micro
Applications Packages Limited (M.A.P.) now form an integrated solution that
allows engineers, detailers, fabricators, and contractors to seamlessly
share information-rich building information models.
Information is what counts as Building Information Modeling (BIM) is
transforming the way AEC/O professionals collaborate on a day-in, day-out
basis. Today's construction project is comprised of many complex systems;
designed, detailed, fabricated and constructed by many. These systems must
be coordinated prior to construction to ensure that construction activities
are executed smoothly and efficiently. Gone are the days when paper drawings
alone were enough to communicate design, detailing or construction intent.
The bi-directional data exchange between Tekla Structures and CAD-Duct
software allows their respective users to smoothly share and merge data rich
building information models.
- For mechanical designers and contractors, this means the
ability to find clashes between their systems or even design and detail
around the structural system, effectively eliminating clashes before
they happen.
- For structural engineers and detailers, the integration
allows them to analyze interfaces, for example penetrations, and even
include mechanical systems on structural design or detailed drawings for
clear coordination.
- For general contractors, the integration allows them to take
CAD-Duct models into Tekla Structures. This opens up new construction
management possibilities with activities like quantity take-off,
estimating, scheduling, design and detailing coordination, clash
detection, supply-chain management and more.
"We have successfully used both MAP and Tekla applications on a number of
projects for Turner Construction," says David Pikey of Hill Mechanical, a
company in the United States. "From a contractor's point of view, it is
important to be able to control the projects, through the model, and to be
able to drill down to obtain additional information for items and to also be
able to extract quantities for scheduling and budgeting purposes. You can't
do that unless the BIM objects come across with their information intact.
The integration between Tekla Structures and CAD-Duct allows us to do that."
"Tekla is strongly committed to openness towards other software through
standardization, even more so now that we are a full member of the
international buildingSMART alliance," says Vice Executive President of
Tekla, Risto Raty. "Our users, engineers, contractors, detailers and
fabricators, need the ability to coordinate their various building systems
to ensure quality construction that is executed efficiently. It's not just
about detecting clashes or the geometry of construction elements; they need
seamless access to each element's information to do their work effectively."
About Tekla Corporation

Tekla Structures
Tekla's technology creates new opportunities for the disciplines in the
construction industry: Tekla Structures is the most advanced BIM (Building
Information Modeling) software on the market that provides an accurate,
dynamic, and data-rich 3D environment for structural engineers, steel
detailers and fabricators, concrete detailers and manufacturers, and
construction companies to share. The highly detailed as-built structural
models created in Tekla Structures enable effective visualization and
management of any project from sales and bidding to follow-up. Openly
integrating model and non-model-based data into the model allows
collaborative workflows to streamline the design, fabrication, and
construction stages for the highest level of constructability and
integration in project delivery. Centralizing project management into the
model not only increases productivity in each stage, but also enhances the
value of structural modeling throughout the value chain of building.

Micro Applications Packages Ltd.
Micro Applications Packages Limited (M.A.P.) is an independent software
house located in Blackpool, UK. The company was founded in 1982 to provide
computer-based solutions to a variety of industries and rapidly evolved to
specialize in design, estimating and manufacturing software. Focusing
efforts in this area led to the development of a trilogy of programs for the
HVAC ductwork Industry; EST-Duct and CAD-Duct are now recognized globally as
the market leaders in this sector. M.A.P. continuously evolves and improves
the products and services they provide. They also monitor advances in
technology allied to changes in business practice with a view to developing
new products and markets. M.A.P. has clients in more than 60 countries
across 5 continents and a proven record of supplying and supporting systems
to a world market.
