FMC Group Uses Tekla Structures, Tests IFC 2x3 Standard
ESPOO,
Finland, May 31, 2007 - Finnmap Consulting (FMC Group), a leading structural
engineering office in both public and private projects, is taking a step
further in promoting collaboration between architects and engineers together
with Tekla Corporation. Finnmap uses the Tekla Structures building
information modeling (BIM) software and has tested the IFC 2x3 standard in a
high-profile business center project.
Finnmap Consulting has used Tekla Structures and tested the IFC 2x3 data
exchange format to support collaboration with architects for the structural
engineering of, for example, the Shopping and Business Center Entresse
located in Espoo, Finland. Entresse is a 33,000 sqm project, with a frame
designed in concrete for the first floor and in steel for the upper floors.
The slabs are made of pre-stressed hollow-core slabs. The foundation of
Entresse is based on concrete piles on one end of the building and built
straight on excavated rock on the other.
The IFC 2x3 format enables standardized communication between
architectural and structural software. "We have tested data exchange using
the IFC 2x3 format with the entire Tekla Structures model and with parts of
the model, such as the steel frame, the hollow core slabs, the cast-in-place
structures and the concrete columns, and we are happy with the results,"
says Juha Valjus, Development Manager at Finnmap Consulting.
Large projects in particular benefit from tighter collaboration between
architects and engineers. The standardized IFC 2x3 format supports design
coordination between all design parties, leads to shorter schedules, and
improves the quality of design.
Lassi Lifländer, Product Specialist at Tekla, continues: "We are
extremely excited that our advanced customer Finnmap Consulting uses the IFC
2x3 format. This proves that the interface between Tekla Structures and the
architectural applications is useful and that the BIM workflow really works
in practice. We are very happy to continue our work to enhance the
collaboration capabilities in Tekla Structures."
About Tekla Structures
Tekla Structures software is a BIM tool that streamlines the delivery
process of design, detailing, manufacturing, and construction organizations.
While integrating openly with architectural models, its strength lies in the
contractor end of the process. Thousands of Tekla Structures software users
in more than 80 countries have successfully delivered BIM-based projects
around the world.
Tekla Structures' ability to process extensive amounts of data enables
the creation of detailed 3D models that can be applied to every stage of
design and construction. From planning and design development through to
fabrication and installation, Tekla models naturally develop in parallel,
representing the "as-built" condition of a building. Tekla Structures
effectively integrates into any best-of-breed software-driven workflow,
while maintaining the highest levels of data integrity and accuracy. Such
collaborative workflows are the key to minimizing errors and maximizing
efficiency, resulting in high profitability and on-time project completion.
Tekla Structures encompasses specialized configurations for structural
engineers, steel detailers and fabricators, precast concrete detailers and
manufacturers, as well as contractors.

International Alliance for Interoperability
The International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) is a global
alliance of organizations dedicated to bringing about a coordinated change
for the improvement of productivity and efficiency in the industries of
construction and facilities management. The organizations within the
alliance are members of regional chapters. Currently, the IAI has chapters
serving Australasia, the Benelux countries, China, the French-speaking
countries, the German-speaking countries, the Iberian countries, Italy,
Japan, Korea, North America, the Nordic countries, Singapore, and the UK.
There are 447 organizations participating in the IAI. More information at

About IFC
The IAI issued the first, full release of its Industry Foundation Classes
(IFC) information model in January 1997. Several further releases have been
issued since. IFCs have been endorsed by the International Standards
Organization (ISO) as a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) under the
label ISO/PAS 16739. Issued in October 2006, the IFC 2x3 marked a major
change in the way that IFCs are developed and released. It has created a
framework for the development of models that can progressively extend the
range and capability of IFCs in a modular way. More information at
