Tekla Becomes First 2009 buildingSMART International Member
ATLANTA,
Feb 17, 2009 - Tekla is first Finnish member of buildingSMART International.
Tekla Corporation became a member of buildingSMART(TM) International at
the beginning of 2009. This membership, which is the first and so far only
international membership by a Finnish company, supports Tekla's goal to
support open interoperability and full lifecycle implementation of building
information modeling (BIM) with other leading software providers, such as
Autodesk and Bentley. Standardized data exchange between architectural,
engineering and construction software significantly improves the overall
cost efficiency, sustainability and quality of building. Tekla will host and
sponsor the buildingSMART's Implementer Support Group (ISG) follow-up
meeting in Espoo, Finland, between 10 and 12 March 2009.
BuildingSMART is an international membership organization of the
International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI), the emphasis of which is
to demonstrate the efficiency and sustainability benefits that software
interoperability can deliver and to help members and their supply chains in
implementation. Before international membership, Tekla was a member of the
organization's regional chapter. BuildingSMART has chaptered representation
worldwide, bringing together architects, engineers, constructors, product
manufacturers and facilities managers, along with software vendors and
progressive construction customers. Leading experts from around the world
have helped buildingSMART define and develop the standards or protocols to
be used as a framework for data exchange, creating the Industry Foundation
Classes (IFC) standard and gaining ISO recognition. Their work has proved
that building performance and predictability of outcomes are greatly
improved by adopting building information models and sharing this rich data
with IFC.
The openness of the Tekla Structures BIM software towards other software
used in the industry is Tekla's way to help customers benefit the most from
a smooth BIM workflow, and international membership of buildingSMART is an
important step in the continuous development towards standardized data
exchange. Tekla has previously received their certification for supporting
the IFC 2x3 standard. The main IFC-based workflow in building and
construction starts with the architectural design and continues to
structural modeling and analysis. From the analysis, the building
information returns to structural modeling.
"The construction industry is starting to revolutionize its productivity
by sharing data and improving processes through standardization," says
Ragnar Wessman, Chief Product Strategist at Tekla. "Tekla fully supports
this change by offering open, collaborative and standardized software
solutions. We are a pioneer in open solution development, and thus it is
natural for us to be the first software company in Finland to support
buildingSMART as an international member. We will continue to develop Tekla
Structures as the most interoperable software solution for our customers."
Tekla Corporation will host the buildingSMART Implementer Support Group (ISG)
meeting in Espoo, Finland, between 10 and 12 March 2009. The meeting will
focus on the framework for the continuous development of IFC-based
communication between software solutions for structural engineering as well
as present successful BIM projects carried through in Finland. The meeting
participants will represent software vendors and organizations from several
countries. The participants in previous meetings have included companies
like Autodesk (US), Bentley (US), Vizelia (US), Archimen Group (France),
Robobat (France), Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Germany), Nemetschek
(Germany), RIB Software (Germany), SCIA (Belgium), TNO (The Netherlands),
Graphisoft (Hungary), DDS (Norway), Norconsult (Norway), Kymdata (Finland),
Progman (Finland), Solibri (Finland), and Tekla (Finland).

About Tekla Structures
Tekla's technology creates new business opportunities for the
construction industry. The most advanced building information modeling (BIM)
solution on the market includes an accurate, dynamic and data-rich
3-dimensional environment. The highly detailed 'as-built' digital structural
models generated with Tekla Structures software enable effective
visualization and management of the project. Effectively integrating model
and non-model-based software solutions allows using the building information
model in collaborative workflows. Tekla Structures users can streamline the
design, fabrication, and construction processes, ultimately ensuring the
highest level of constructability in project delivery. Tekla Structures
encompasses specialized configurations for structural engineers, steel
detailers and fabricators, concrete detailers and manufacturers, and
construction companies.

About buildingSMART
BuildingSMART(TM) International, formerly the International Alliance for
Interoperability (IAI), is a global alliance of organizations dedicated to
bring about a coordinated change for the improvement of productivity and
efficiency in the construction and facilities management industries.
BuildingSMART's emphasis is to demonstrate the efficiency and sustainability
benefits that true interoperability can deliver and to help members and
their supply chains in implementation. The service offering of the
buildingSMART International Alliance includes developing and operating a
global standard; supporting members in business generation; providing them
with a sounding board in the international organization; and syndicating
technical development work, promotion and marketing. BuildingSMART
International is organized in Regional Alliances representing a country or a
group of countries acting together. Currently, buildingSMART International
has Regional Alliances serving Australasia, Benelux, China, the
French-speaking countries, the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria
and Switzerland), the Iberian countries (Spain and Portugal), Italy, Japan,
Korea, North America, the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Norway and
Sweden), Singapore and the United Kingdom and Ireland.
