MILAN, Italy, Feb 3, 2009 - think3 announces the full availability of MoldDesign, a CAD solution developed for the mold making world with specific functions offering high productivity for the considerable work needed to design a plastic injection mold.

MoldDesign covers the whole mold creation process, from Part Analysis and management of very complex models of solids and surfaces, to Tooling. With MoldDesign, small and medium companies are always able to carry out complex projects.

MoldDesign: from Part Analysis to Tooling

The new vertical solution is based on ThinkDesign, which boasts well-known features such as hybrid modeling, capable of managing solids and surfaces with absolute transparency; Interactive Solid Modeling (ISM), which allows modifications to be made to both native and imported solid models moving away from the necessarily parametric logic (history-independent model editing); and Zone Modeling, for warpage* correction (*distortion of the molded part).

The specific mold design tools provided by Mold Design allow:

  • loading of the part, and analysis with specific quality check tools
  • improvements using ISM and Zone Modeling, maintaining the quality of the model
  • creation of the parting line with the major added value of Semantic Associativity, capable of updating the line following any changes to the shape
  • automatic division into core and cavity
  • subdivision of volumes to create the slides
  • creation together of parametric mold base with plates and columns electrode design
  • detecting of the collisions to detect interferences between parts
  • insertion of standard library parts (DME, HASCO and others)
  • creation of cooling systems with 3D paths

Interesting advantages derive from the Capping functionality - which allows refining complex ‘parting planes’ created from the Silhouette command – providing the capability of creating the highest quality parting lines. Trimming surfaces that must be divided is not required, as requested by most solutions on the market.

The solution does not stop at the generation of 3D models, but continues with the automatic creation of the 2D tables necessary to produce the mold. It can also be extended to include full management of documentation, revisions and generation of specifications integrating into TD PLM, think3's Product Lifecycle Management solution. This simplifies the collaboration on the mold, the maintenance of the mold and preservation and sharing of the corresponding information.

think3 allows the whole mold design process to be covered with a single solution, offering powerful and flexible tools capable of responding effectively to specific requests at every stage of the cycle.
