BILBAO, Spain, May 20, 2008 - After more than 10 years of successfully and intensive use of FORAN, Severnoye Design Bureau has reached an agreement with SENER for the extension and reconfiguration of the number of permanent licenses in order to fit their new project demands.

The Severnoye Design Bureau, a leading company designing naval and commercial ships in Russia, was founded on April 22, 1946. Throughout the Bureau's more than 62-year life a group of highly qualified naval architects has been capable to solve the most complicated tasks in the area of designing ships and vessels.

The Bureau has designed more than a hundreds ships of different type ranging from 500-ton patrol boat to 26,000-ton heavy nuclear-powered cruiser, and from bulker to whaling boat. In general, more than 550 ships and vessels with a total displacement of about 1.5 million tons have been built under the Bureau's designs. All of them are notable for their seaworthiness, reliability and operation economy. Some of the vessels were for the international market.

Within the last years the Severnoye Design Bureau has developed designs of freezer vessels, trawlers, passenger vessels (SWATH vessel inclusive), environmental vessels with systems of water and atmosphere ecological monitoring, vessels for collection and integrated processing of waste oily water and solid wastes and a hospital vessel. The Severnoye Design Bureau takes part in the Russian Navy Revival program. More than 20 pilot projects have been carried out.

The ships and vessels designing process in the Bureau are most up-to-date and distinguished by using FORAN System.

Some examples are:

  • Multipurpose frigate of Project 22350 for the Russian Navy was laid on  February 1, 2007 at the Severnaya Verf shipyard based in Saint Petersburg. The ship is designed for combat operations in blue or brown water area, and in the ocean. Ship’s displacement is 4,500 tons, overall length is greater than 130 m, and cruising range is greater than 4,000 nautical miles.
  • Development of detailed design documentation is carried out for the modernized Project 11356 follow-on frigates (the Indian Navy) that are under construction at the Yantar shipyard based at Kaliningrad.
  • In 2003 three frigates of Project 11356 built to the Bureau’s design were delivered to India. These ships were equipped with advanced weapon systems. The frigates received a good rating from the customer; this fact became a justification for the new contract for the construction of the follow-on ships.
  • Border guard ship of Project 22460 designed in the Bureau is under construction at Almaz shipyard. The ship is designed for the defense of state border, natural resources of internal waters, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, as well as for fighting terrorist groups, smuggling and piracy, for rescue operations, for environmental monitoring and cure of natural disaster effects.
  • The Bureau’s specialists are participating in the technical assistance for the construction of Project 17 lead ship of frigate class that is about to be completed. The ships are being constructed in Mumbai (India) at the Mazagon Dock Limited Shipyard. The trials are going to be held in April this year.

About FORAN

FORAN is a totally integrated computer system specifically developed for design and construction of ships. It comprises several main packages (hull form definition, naval architecture, hull structure, outfitting, electrical, accommodation), a number of common modules (build strategy, drafting, walk-through design review, collaborative engineering), links with production equipment (cutting machines, bending machines, robotic systems, etc.), interfaces to management systems and its own integrated development environment.

Running on Windows workstations connected through LAN or WAN, FORAN permits a fully interactive and concurrent definition of the ship 3D product model. The most recent design information is available in Oracle database for designers of a wide range of complementary disciplines. When designing each ship part or each sub-assembly, their production processes are defined too, thus enabling the generation of custom-made, accurate and well-organized information for workshops (drawings, material lists and direct input to production systems), with the highest level of automation.

The current user base of the FORAN System consists of over 130 shipyards and design offices located in 27 countries.
