Laser Design 64 Bit PCs Include Surveyor 3D Laser Scanner
MINNEAPOLIS,
MN, Dec 9, 2008 - Laser Design Inc., the leading supplier of 3D laser
scanners for more than 20 years, is now shipping 64-bit computers with all
of its Surveyor 3D laser scanning systems. The added processing capability
translates into faster scanning speeds, faster processing speeds, and more
reliable service when working with extremely large files. With more than 4
gigabytes of RAM, the improved system PCs make scanning fast and dependable.

Greg Hetzler, Director of Engineering at Laser Design, said,
"Sixty-four-bit computing opens up new doors for laser scanning. In addition
to increased data processing speed, 64-bit systems allow for double to
quadruple the amount of system memory vs. a standard 32-bit system. This
allows users to capture and work with significantly larger point clouds, and
consequently perform tasks that would have been impossible before."
When scanning at a high density, file sizes can quickly balloon,
occasionally causing the system to crash. The 64-bit computers make that a
thing of the past. The larger RAM capacity combined with the SLP probes and
the improved Surveyor Scan Control (SSC) software reduce both time and
effort in data capture and in creating a 3D point cloud. As the SLP laser
probe projects a line of laser light onto a part, cameras continuously
triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser line as it sweeps
along. The system measures fine details and captures complex free-form
geometry so that the object can be exactly replicated and inspected. Laser
line scanners quickly measure articles, picking up tens of thousands of
points per second, and generating huge numbers of data points without the
need for templates or fixtures.
With the new high-performance laptops that have recently become
available, Laser Design can offer the same expanded file capacity and
processing speed on the portable Surveyor FA-Series systems as well.
FA-Series systems use the articulated FARO arms which are easy to set up and
can scan on-site anywhere.
About Laser Design, Inc.
Laser Design, Inc. has been the leading supplier of ultra-precise, 3D
laser scanning systems and services for over 20 years. Used for capturing
the 3D shape of objects with complex geometries and free-form surfaces,
Laser Design's high accuracy, CMM-based and portable laser scanning systems
are ideal for 3D scanning applications involving inspection and reverse
engineering of complex shaped plastic and metal parts. The company's
patented laser line-probe technology dramatically reduces scanning time by
collecting data substantially faster and more accurately than conventional
metrology technologies. Laser Design integrates Geomagic software with its
laser scanners to provide complete solutions for reverse engineering and
inspection applications.
Headquartered in Minneapolis, the company has Regional Technical Services
and Support Centers in major U.S. markets, and distributors throughout
Europe and Asia. Laser Design also operates GKS Inspection Services (www.GKS.com),
an in-house service bureau division offering complete 3D scanning, reverse
engineering, and dimensional inspection services.
