Bentley Goes Green at Annual Conference
BALTIMORE,
MD, May 28, 2008 (BE Conference 2008) – As everybody’s favorite Muppet Kermit the Frog once said,
“It’s not easy being Green.’” But everyone involved with this year’s
BE
Conference 2008 has made every effort to ensure their carbon footprint
in putting on this event is as small as possible. Here are some of the
initiatives that the Bentley, the City of Baltimore, the Baltimore
Convention Center, and Freeman have employed to make Be Conference a green
event.
Bentley at BE Conference 2008
Bentley employed the following energy-saving and recycling initiatives
for BE Conference 2008
- 65% of local Bentley colleagues traveled to Baltimore via bus or
carpool.
- Onsite recycling name badges and lanyards at BE Conference
- Onsite Brochure printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
certified paper, which identifies products containing wood fiber from
well-managed forests
- Reusing registration counters for the third year
- Filling water glasses only when requested to reduce water use
- Using water jugs with recycled paper cups to reduce bottled-water
consumption
- Contracting hotels within walking distance of Baltimore Convention
Center
City of Baltimore:

Baltimore’s Clearwater Mills - The world's first
waterwheel powered debris collector
The Water Wheel Powered Trash Interceptor is an innovative advancement in
technology. It collects trash that washes into streams and storm water
systems, thereby preventing it from discharging into harbors and bays. An
undershot waterwheel, driven by solar panels, wind generator, and river
current, powers a conveyor to lift trash into a dumpster on a separate
barge. The trash is taken to shore for disposal.
Benefits:
- Cleaner city
- Powered by renewable energy
- Cost-effective tool for trash removal
- Continuous river cleaning capabilities
- Educational point of interest along the waterway
- An attractive demonstration of a commitment to improve the
environment
Baltimore’s Sustainability Program:
The City of Baltimore has undertaken a number of sustainability
initiatives:
- Installing energy-efficient lighting, bathroom fixtures, temperature
control systems, and windows in 180 Baltimore City public school
buildings and performing similar work at 33 municipal buildings
- Replacing traffic lights with energy-efficient LED lights
- Constructing a landfill gas cogeneration facility to power the U.S.
Coast Guard Yard using methane gas
- Creating the Office of Sustainability, the Commission on Resource
Sustainability and Green Building Requirements, and establishing the
Environmental Sub- Cabinet to work directly with the Mayor’s Cabinet on
sustainability issues
- Creating the Baltimore Biodiesel Cooperative, a nonprofit
organization dedicated to the promoting and selling environmentally
sustainable biodiesel fuel.
- Establishing Baltimore Green Map, a collaborative project that
encourages the discovery, use, and stewardship of the region’s natural,
cultural, and green-living resources for city residents and visitors
alike, www.baltogreenmap.org.
Baltimore Convention Center
The Baltimore Convention Center’s green initiatives include:
- Purchasing office paper with a large percentage of post consumer
material
- Fully recyclable meeting-room tables containing 30% recycled
products
- Removing 95% of the aerosol cleaning products
- Bulk purchases of bio-based cleaning fluids in and refilling bottles
on site.
- Incorporating natural/organic products into our selections when
possible
- Implementing a recycling program
- Use China Services Exclusively for all functions on all levels
except exhibit halls
- Recycling program for ink cartridges
Energy Practices
- Exterior glass structure and skylights make use of natural light
- Using lighting sensors that reduce energy and extend florescent life
expectancy
- Air handling units utilize 100 percent outside air capabilities when
exterior air temperature is below 50 degrees
- Equipping all meeting rooms with a motion-sensor-operated damper and
motion sensors that turn off lights in empty meeting rooms
- Equipping air handling unit motors and pumps with energy recovery
wheels and variable frequency drives
- Part of a co-op that purchases bulk electricity at reduced rates
Freeman
For its trade shows Bentley uses the services of Freeman contractors,
which employ the following sustainability best practices:
- Distributes exhibitor manuals electronically via Freeman Online to
save paper
- Created a unique partnership program that turns used carpet into
drainage pipe for septic systems to dramatically reduce land-fill waste.
The successful innovative industry program assures show mangers that
carpet used at their events is 100% recyclable
Vehicle Emissions
- Uses over 70% LP natural gas (propane) fuel for forklifts, carts,
and other vehicles to improve safety lower the overall toxicity of the
air quality
