Autodesk Offers Europe BIM Survey Report
FARNBOROUGH,
UK, Apr 14, 2011 - Results of recent Autodesk survey of decision makers in the architecture,
engineering and construction industry (AEC) across Europe demonstrate dramatic
progress in the take-up of building information modeling (BIM) and suggest that
the vast majority of firms across the region will be using this method of
working by 2013.
Over 100 delegates were surveyed at Autodesk
BIM conferences in London, Munich and Milan
towards the end of last year. Of those polled,
60% in the UK, 57% in Germany and 55% in Italy
were already using BIM methods. But of those
respondents not already using BIM, 82% in the
UK, 85% in Germany and 42% in Italy expect to do
so within the next two years.
BIM is an integrated process for exploring a
project’s key physical and functional
characteristics digitally before it’s built.
Coordinated, consistent information is used
throughout the process to design innovative
projects; better visualize and simulate
real-world appearance, performance and cost; and
create more accurate documentation. This helps
to deliver projects faster and more
economically, while minimizing their
environmental impact.
The majority of those polled in the survey
thought that the recent economic downturn had
been a major catalyst for change within the
industry (70% in the UK and 51% in both Italy
and Germany). “There could be several reasons
why respondents from the UK were more emphatic;
for example, the central role the housing market
plays in the country’s economy and the
subsequent impact of its downturn on the entire
industry,” says Pete Baxter, senior director of
Autodesk. “Those surveyed in all three countries
agreed that the take-up of BIM was a natural
progression for the industry following concerns
over waste and inefficiencies and the need for
more sustainable design.”
When asked to select the biggest benefits of
BIM, respondents from UK and Germany chose
“enables improved collaboration” whereas Italy
put “helps deal with late changes quickly” at
the top of the list. Interestingly, across all
three, “resistance to change in culture” was
cited as the biggest barrier to BIM adoption.
Cost came far lower down the list for all but
the German respondents; 28% of which thought
this to be a major barrier, compared to 12.3% in
the UK and 18% in Italy.
About Autodesk BIM Solutions
Autodesk BIM solutions for the building
industry are based on models created with
Autodesk Revit software—including solutions for
architecture; structural engineering; and
mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP)
engineering. AutoCAD Civil 3D software is the
BIM solution for infrastructure for civil
engineers, drafters, designers, and technicians
working on transportation, land development, and
water projects. Autodesk’s broad portfolio of
applications, including AutoCAD software for
documentation and professional drafting,
complements these core BIM products and helps
expand the power of BIM.
