• The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) is a joint initiative of all levels of government in Australia; responsible for developing and managing a uniform, national approach to building codes and building standards; responsible for developing and managing a nationally uniform approach to technical building requirements, currently embodied in the Building Code of Australia (BCA); developing a simpler and more efficient building regulatory system; and enabling the building industry to adopt new and innovative construction technology and practices.

Notes: Until the late 1970s Australia did not have a national building code. First in 1988 the Building Code of Australia (BCA) was published, followed in 1990 by an amended edition. Unlike the National Building Code of Canada, it is an application code and not a model code. State variations are included to accommodate regional needs.
