Day 31 - Another 3 State Day

Location Distance Average Speed

Very Good

I'm in Massachusetts! The breadth of this small New England state is all that separates me from my goal of going coast to coast. I can almost smell the ocean.

Not so fast, buddy, you've still go the whole state to cross.

I started the day in New York state, rode through the corner of Vermont and ended up in Greenfield, MA. That's three states in three days, once again.

It didn't rain at all. What a relief that was! The temperature was cool (as low as 50 degrees) and I kept a a long sleeve jersey and leg warmers on all day.

The best part of the ride was a 6 mile after the town of North Adams. This was a nice gradual slope and just what I needed. My legs had been protesting every time I'd come away from a stop. Mentally, I was feeling drained and, try as I might, I couldn't muster the exertion to go fast. But the 6 miles uphill changed that. I stood up on the pedals and quickly a rhythm. I watched my heart rate monitor and it was recording in the 140's (beats per minute) and even wound up in the 150's--a level I had not been able to attain for weeks. It felt great and it reminded me of some of my favorite climbs back in Marin County.

I arrived at the peak flushed with excitement as well as the heat of exertion. But the winds whipping around the peak were cold (I could see my breath) and by the time I was descending in the fog, I was wishing I had winter gloves on.
