Today, I rode through the rest of Ohio, through the
tip of Pennsylvania that borders Lake Erie and into New York. It was one the
highest mileage days but it was going through 3 states in one day that was the
greatest psychological bonus.

It felt like great
progress today as I rode from Ohio into Pennsylvania and then into New York
for a total of 142 miles |

The weather followed a now familiar pattern. The
rain had stopped early in the morning, leaving the roads wet. There was much
evidence of a heavy downpour, with lots of standing water and dirt and
rocks across the road where streams had overflowed their banks. The bike got
completely sprayed with water, dirt and vegetation and so did my legs, feet and
back (the spray from the rear tire sprays up the riders back). Luckily, not a
drop of rain fell on me again until I finished the days riding. After I hung my
washed clothes out the hotel window hillbilly style did it rain again. Now I
know: wash the bike or hang out the wash to make it rain.
The scenery was great. Lots of greenery--which is much
appreciated by any California native. A special treat was to see 2 covered
bridges. One was still operational while another had been moved and preserved.

A real working covered bridge. Bridges were covered to protect the wooden bridge
surface from the elements.
The route followed the banks of Lake Erie. Although I
kept seeing hints of it, it's really only a few places where the lake is clearly
visible from Route 5. Mostly, its blocked by earth and trees. Still, a cool
breeze from blowing in from it and was most welcome in the late afternoon.
