Day 22 - Into Indiana

Location Distance Average Speed
Lebanon, IN 101 miles 18.1 mph
Weather Strength Morale
Rain, Sun, Humidity Very Good

Very Good

"Popcorn shower" was how they described the quick, short rainfall that I encountered today as I entered Indiana. There were 2 of them, they lasted only a minute each time but each left me wet. They were not in the forecast so I was riding without raingear in a day that started with clear skies. They were not unpleasant but left the air thick with humidity.

After being used to the dry western states, I had learned to drink water every time my throat was dry. I realized 2 hours into today's ride that despite the heat (mid 80s), I had not touched my water. With the humid air, my throat was not drying out. I had better just remember to drink water because that was too long to not drink anything.

Another state entered. After being used to the big western states, the Midwest states seem to be coming fast and furious.

Hillsboro residents offer a welcome alternative to the usual town signs.

I've been lucky as far as flats go, with only 3 punctures so far. That's pretty good considering some of the roads we've been on so far. I think I've seen every type of road surface imaginable, from smooth new blacktop to the most cratered, cracked shoulders--even unpaved surfaces and stretches of gravel.

Dodging cracks and construction in narrow road through Indiana

I want to thank every one who has taken the time to email me and offer encouragement and good wishes. Several people have even offered to meet me along the way, buy me food and drinks. Thanks all. I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me that so many care about what I am doing. Please do keep reading and do keep in touch. Your words are like fuel in my engine on the long hours on the road. If I don't reply right away, don't get worried. I wish I had more time at the end of the day but I have to set myself a curfew so I get enough rest. Thanks, again.
