A fairly short day today. The sky looked ominous all day and did finally
deliver rain for about a half hour towards the end of the ride. I got fairly
soaked but as it was warm (70s all day) it was not unpleasant. The winds were
part tailwind for most of the day so I was able to make good time, getting to
the hotel a few minutes after noon.

The Stars and Stripes and the Missouri flag fly over a park in Dekalb, MO.
I had been looking forward to crossing the Missouri river all day.
Unfortunately, the bridge over the river was under construction and dodging
cars, construction crews and some treacherous grates left little time to enjoy
the view. However, what I did see was not what I expected. Although it is the
longest river in the USA, it is not all that wide at Atchinson, KS. The
Mississippi is the next big river crossing.
Yesterday's rest made a big difference in performance today. I was able to
maintain a heart rate of 125-135 throughout the entire ride. That's about 10
beats per minute above the previous ride day and only slightly under the range
in which I do my training rides. Most say that the available heart rate should
decline in successive days on a ride like this so it is encouraging that mine is
still high.
