Although there's been many days with high heat, I've consoled myself with the
fact that it could be worse--it could be raining. Well guess what I awoke to
today. Hint: I just washed and cleaned my bike yesterday.
Rain wasn't all I had to worry about, either. There was lightning and
thunder. The best thing to do when you are at risk of being hit by lightning is
to seek cover in a house. You'd have to knock on doors and ask to be let in. If
you can't do that, did you know you should find a low area, like a ditch, and
squat down as low as you can?
Not wanting to do that, I waited until almost 8:30 before I left. That meant
hanging around the hotel lobby for 2 hours. By then, the lightning had stopped
and the rain was down to a drizzle. After a couple of hours the sun came out.
The wind, however, did not let up all day. Coming from the south and blowing
at up to 30 mph, it provided a battering as I moved eastward. By the time I
started going north on Rte 87, I had recorded a snail like 13.6 mph.
