Day 14 - A Soggy Beginning

Location Distance Average Speed

Weather Strength Morale
Rain in AM, sunny most of the day, windy Good

Good

Although there's been many days with high heat, I've consoled myself with the fact that it could be worse--it could be raining. Well guess what I awoke to today. Hint: I just washed and cleaned my bike yesterday.

Rain wasn't all I had to worry about, either. There was lightning and thunder. The best thing to do when you are at risk of being hit by lightning is to seek cover in a house. You'd have to knock on doors and ask to be let in. If you can't do that, did you know you should find a low area, like a ditch, and squat down as low as you can?

Not wanting to do that, I waited until almost 8:30 before I left. That meant hanging around the hotel lobby for 2 hours. By then, the lightning had stopped and the rain was down to a drizzle. After a couple of hours the sun came out.

The wind, however, did not let up all day. Coming from the south and blowing at up to 30 mph, it provided a battering as I moved eastward. By the time I started going north on Rte 87, I had recorded a snail like 13.6 mph.
