Day 10 - The Texas Panhandle

Location Distance Average Speed
Delhart, TX 96 miles 18.1 mph
Weather Strength Morale
Sunny,  49 to 110 degrees Fair

Good

The heat was turned on again today as I crossed the state line into Texas. I recorded a high of 110 degrees. Mercifully, it was a shorter ride than usual and I finished around 2:30 PM. A consistent and strong tailwind helped.

That's me on the left. No, those are not bullet holes in the signs.

The route today was very direct: Route 54 all the way from Las Vegas, New Mexico. More trees appear by the road than were seen in hundreds of miles before but they were still miles apart and offered scant shade. The most memorable sights were the feedlots after we entered Texas. There were acres and acres of densely packed cattle on both sides of the road being fattened on grain from towering silos. The smell was extremely disagreeable and strong. The freight trains that pass through town every ten minutes seem like they're in the next room. Doesn't Delhart sound like a cute little vacation spot?

Being so close to all that beef, it seemed like the local barbecue joint would be the place for dinner. It did not disappoint. The ambience included lots of locals, including one cowpoke wearing his spurs while on a date. I couldn't risk a picture.
