I never thought cycling would be boring but maybe that's because I happen to
live in Marin county and its varied terrain. After 2 days in Arizona I wonder if
cyclists could actually fall asleep while riding. The route today was almost all
Interstate. Mile after mile of desert--so much of it that even the infrequent
bill board was welcome. Luckily, the high desert is relatively cool or it would
have been hell. The only shade was found under overpasses and that only happened
every 10 miles or so.
The course today was relatively hill free but rose gradually up the whole
way, going from an elevation of under 5,000 ft (at Cottonwood) to over 6,500 ft
here at Gallup.
My average speed today was the fastest yet. That's encouraging, especially
since yesterday I broke my personal record for the most centuries (100 miles or
more) in a row with 5. With today's mileage, I've gone further that I had on my
San Francisco/San Diego ride.

In the vast wasteland, every billboard was a treat. Note the cracks in the
shoulder: bump after bump every 20 feet.

Finally, off the interstate but on a frontage road that offered many bone
jarring potholes and extremely treacherous cattle grates.
