Great cycling day today. Even after yesterday's 11,000 feet of climbing, the
legs responded to today's first climbs without too much protest. However, I'm
finding that I have more difficulty with the long and gradual climbs. Some go on
for miles without much of an incline. Sometimes you don't even realize your on a
hill but your speed drops to 10-12 mph. It feels as if your parking brake is on.
I cant' find the right gear or make up my mind whether to sit or stand.
A short list of physical problems so far:
- Sunburn on both arms and one leg. Not too bad but will definitely develop
into a very peculiar tan pattern.
- Blisters starting to form on hands and left foot. I may have forestalled
them with application of moleskin.
All in all, not bad for 5 days of riding.
Equipment problems have also been minimal. I've had to make a few minor
adjustments in brakes and derailleurs. I had my first flat today. Not bad for
almost 600 miles.

Red Rock looms over the the town of Sedona, Arizona

The road from Sedona to Flagstaff yields a bounty of views for the cyclist. A
river runs to the right.

From Flagstaff to Winslow, it's all desert as far as the eye can see. Sometimes
"dust devil" (mini tornadoes) are visible in the distance.
