Whoa! This is not easy--this is only the first day and it was a doozy. Headwinds
blasted all day. Record temperatures were recorded in the area. At one point, it
reached 114 degrees Fahrenheit on the road.
Hydration and frequent stops were the order of the day. Sun-baked roads went on
for miles and miles in California's high desert with no trees to provide shade.
Water in the bottles quickly turned to air temperature and offered little
relief. The Weather Channel threatens with more of the same tomorrow. Oh, just
let me make it through this heat wave...
The started out well, though. I rode out to the Pacific Ocean to dip my rear
wheel. The front wheel would be dipped into the Atlantic at the end of the ride.
However, a big wave soaked both wheels. Was it a sign that things would not be
going well?

The ceremonial dip in the Pacific to start things off. But the cool was soon to
end.
And What's With the Wind?
The primary reason for going West to East was to follow the jet stream. However,
we were faced with unrelenting headwinds most of the way. A combination of winds
and uphill sections reduced speed to close to walking speed on several occasion.
I didn't make it to the hotel until around 6:30. One bank sign still showed the
temperature to be 95 degrees.
A dip in the hotel pool and a In 'n Out shake helped me cool off.
Let's hope for better conditions tomorrow.
