Committees and will chair its Advancement Committee.
Dr.
Boulos, who has chaired the LAU Board of International Advisors since 2006,
will draw on a distinguished career and vast leadership experience in his
new role. A renowned international authority on water resources engineering,
he is noted for his practical and scientific expertise and his extensive
experience in both academe and the corporate world. He has co-authored nine
authoritative books and more than a hundred technical articles on water and
wastewater engineering.
Dr. Boulos has received numerous industry honors, including awards for
excellence in scholarship from national and international scientific and

from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Works
Association and the US Environmental Protection Agency. In 2008, he was
awarded Honorary Diplomate status (Hon.D.WRE) by AAWRE, the Academy’s
highest honor; accepted the Lebanese American Foundation Pride of Heritage
Award; and received Special US Congressional Recognition. This year, he was
presented with one of America’s most prestigious awards, the Ellis Island
Medal of Honor, for his outstanding contributions to our communities, our
nation and the world.
Dr. Boulos serves on the Board of Directors of MWH Soft, MWH Global and
MWH international as well as AMIDEAST (Washington DC), the American Academy
of Water Resources Engineers, and the Dean’s International Council of the
Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago. He has
been a member of advisory and executive committees for many organizations,
including the External Advisory Board of the Civil and Environmental
Engineering School of the American University of Beirut, the US EPA Science
Advisory Board and the National Academy of Sciences/National Research
Council.
Dr. Boulos received his Doctorate, Master of Science, and Bachelor of
Science degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky, and
has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Dr. Joseph G. Jabbra, President of LAU, said, “Dr. Paul Boulos is a great
alumnus of our university and an admirable human being. He deeply
cares for people and selflessly and generously gives to others. He is humble
in his effective leadership, generates contagious passion for noble causes,
and inspires reassuring confidence to anyone he comes in contact with. I
have known Dr. Boulos for the past four years and always saw in him a man of
vision and action, a concerned friend, and a deeply committed member and
Chair of our Board of International Advisors (BIA).
“During his tenure on the BIA, he energized us all by his burning
enthusiasm for LAU, and thus he gained our admiration, the respect of his
colleagues, and the affection of his friends. Dr. Boulos is a
strategic thinker, hard working, and forward looking. I am so happy that he
is now a member of our Board of Trustees and of the Nominating Committee,
and Chair of the Advancement Committee. We are so proud of him and LAU
is lucky to have his strong commitment.”
One of the top academic institutions in the Middle East, LAU is a private
American not-for-profit higher education institution. Over 1,400 students
each year graduate from its Schools of Arts & Sciences, Business,
Engineering and Architecture, Medicine and Pharmacy. Its alumni are employed
at leading companies around the world. The university has 209 faculty
members and two campuses, in Beirut and Byblos. Its current student body of
7,200 at the undergraduate and graduate levels represents seventy-five
nationalities.
Founded by the Presbyterian Church, USA, in 1924, LAU is governed by a
Board of Trustees who derive their authority from the Board of Regents of
the University of the State of New York. The Board of Trustees is
responsible for ensuring that the university is furthering its mission
organizationally, administratively, educationally, spiritually, socially,
and financially. It also assures adequate facilities as well as a policy
framework for the university’s administration. The Board consists of 25
members, most of them American, and is currently chaired by Dr. Charles
Elachi, Director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
California, and Vice President of the California Institute of Technology.
“I am humbled and honored to join a distinguished Board of Trustees in
guiding LAU as it builds on its rich past and carries out its bold vision of
the future with a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and
service,” said Dr. Boulos. “This is a very exciting time to be involved with
LAU. In the last few years, particularly with the arrival of Dr. Jabbra as
President, the university has aggressively moved toward an international
presence, established cutting-edge faculty in several areas, and attracted a
student body as strong as that of any American university. I feel privileged
to join a community of people dedicated to public service, and welcome this
important opportunity to serve our community beyond the university and help
build a better world for the greater good. I look forward to playing an
active role in preserving the university’s legacy and widening its students’
vision of life’s potential.”
