Japan's Utsunomiya University Picks CATIA

In its over 60 years of existence, Utsunomiya University has always thrived to return the results of its research and education to society. The University’s Measurement and Robot Laboratory (Ozaki’s Lab), focusing its R&D on independently moving robots, has chosen CATIA for designing and simulating those robots in multi-faceted aspects while providing advanced 3D design skills to its students.

With CATIA Academic License for educational organization, Utsunomiya University offers the best 3D virtual design technology to its students. The software includes almost all the functions that CATIA provides, enabling the students to utilize all advanced design and simulation functions.

“Our University is located in Tochigi prefecture where major Japanese manufacturing companies have their design and manufacturing sites. We are expected to offer practical education, including CATIA skills,” said Koichi Ozaki, Associate Professor of the Graduate School at Utsunomiya University. “We selected CATIA because it provides rich functions in design verification and multiple simulations. I believe that we will excel among research and educational institutes by leveraging CATIA for further practical education.”

The university has been participating in the Tochigi Consortium, the first academic-industrial-prefectural collaborative project. It has also joined the technical Tsukuba Challenge, a public experiment of independently moving robots, where its robots have gained an excellent reputation. CATIA was utilized for parts layout, exterior design, interior parts layout, and mechanism simulation to create those robots.

In the future, the university plans to use Dassault Systems solutions not only for the design and simulation of robots, but also in virtual simulation of product behavior.
